Home is always a place where teams feel more comfortable and the UCF women's volleyball team got a nice boost playing in front of a home crowd Friday. The Knights went 2-0 on the first day of the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic.

The Knights also got a boost from junior Angelica Crump. The outside hitter recorded 27 kills in the Knights' victories against Columbia and Jacksonville.

"She really is starting to come into her own," UCF head coach Todd Dagenais said. "We're starting to develop more of a supporting cast around her, where we don't need to depend on her each night.

"Her attacking and her blocking really give us that muscle we need on a night-in and night-out basis," Dagenais added.

Crump was also named to the All-Tournament team at USF last weekend. Her performance in that tournament carried over to Friday and UCF benefitted with victories. 

"It's really important that we win at home," Crump said. "It definitely helps [motivate the team] because we play hard in front of friends. It's real exciting to see the fans and see them keep coming back." 

Crump was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-America Performer last season and was a first-team All-Conference USA selection. But she is working hard to receive higher honors this year.

"I would definitely like to make it on one of the top two [All-American] teams," Crump said. "An honorable mention was great, but I want to progress and make it on one of the top teams this time."

The UCF women's volleyball team will close out the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Liberty.

Even before UCF's victory at Akron Aug. 30, interview requests to speak with the Knights started pouring in. Radio stations from all over Florida and Ohio are looking to have head coach George O'Leary on as a guest, the ESPN2 production team has a teleconference set up Wednesday to speak with some of the Knights and several reporters who cover Ohio State have submitted their requests to cover UCF as well.

Many UCF fans were excited to watch the running backs this season because of the experience and talent the Knights had returning. In Thursday night's 56-14 victory over Akron, the Knights gained 220 yards on the ground.

Senior running back Latavius Murray led the way with 109 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Cedric Thompson was second in rushing with 45 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore Storm Johnson ran for 36 yards and two touchdowns.

The backs were able to display many of their skills at InfoCision Stadium and much of that is because of the performance of the offensive line.

"They blocked really well," Johnson said. "It's always good to have a solid offensive line. We feed off of their energy and that's how we get things done."

Johnson is excited to watch the offensive line this season and see even  more lanes created for the running backs. The Georgia native hopes to celebrate more victories like this during the season.

"I enjoyed every minute of it," Johnson said. "I soaked it up with my teammates and we congratulated everyone and we're ready for more."

Up next for the Knights will be another non-conference opponent from Ohio when UCF travels to Ohio State on Sept. 8.

Several members of the track and field team were on hand Thursday night to receive a special honor from the UCF Student Government Association.

The SGA presented the Knights with a resolution to congratulate the team on its successful 2012 season that saw the Knights clinch their fourth Conference USA championship, claim 13 All-American honors and send four competitors to the USA Olympic Trials.

"The reason the Senate chose to honor the team was because it is a huge source of UCF pride to see the success of our athletic teams," said Matthew Goodison-Orr, chairman of the Campus Relations Committee. "The Senate, especially the Campus Relations Committee, serves to acknowledge the accomplishments of the students that make this university as great as it is. Winning a championship is not easy as it requires hard work and determination of unimaginable levels. The women's track team deserves to recognized for the fruits of their labor."

Assistant coach Paul Brown and sophomore Sandy Jean along with UCF captains Erica Weiss and Sonnisha Williams accepted the recognition on the team's behalf. The quartet received a standing ovation from the Senate. 

The Knights may be opening their season more than 1,000 miles away from Orlando, but many of the UCF faithful are ready for the season to begin.

"It's exciting to open up on the road," longtime UCF fan Rusty Carpenter said. "Living in Kentucky, we're always trying to track down other UCF fans. There is some good energy around the program right now and I think everyone has high expectations."

This is the first time the Knights have opened the season on the road since 2007, when UCF defeated N.C. State 25-23.

Diehard Knights' fans Lynn and Kimmy Trivett have attended every UCF game for more than five years. Thursday is no exception, as they were there to greet the team as they stepped off the bus.

"I'm excited about this year's group of kids," Lynn Trivett said. "Each position is solid and we have some good experience and have some good speed on this team. I really look for us to do great this year."

The UCF football team arrived in Akron, Ohio at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday after a two-hour-and-15-minute flight from the Orlando Sanford International Airport. The team left the Wayne Densch Sports Center a little after 11 a.m. The team was in the air just after 1 p.m.

This is the Knights' first of two consecutive trips to the state of Ohio for the Knights. UCF heads back to the Buckeye State to face Ohio State on Sept. 8.

All-time UCF is 21-12 in season openers. The Knights have won their last six openers and are looking to win their first ever game in Akron. UCF is 0-3 all-time at Akron, but hasn't played here since 2003.

This will be the Knights' first visit to Akron under head coach George O'Leary and their first visit to InfoCision Stadium. Thursday's game will mark the beginning of just the fourth season in the stadium.

Last season, the Zips finished 1-11 overall. But a new season brings a new coach for Akron, with the hiring of Terry Bowden.

UCF redshirt sophomore Marie Reiterova is off to a sizzling start on the court for the Knights, picking up double-doubles in each of the team's first three matches and dishing out the most assists (64) in a single contest by a Knight since 2008.

A year removed from game action after redshirting in 2011, Reiterova worked hard in spring practices and camp into preseason came with one goal in mind, to earn the lead setter position. A fierce competition ensued between Reiterova and freshman Dana Faught that was eventually won by

Off the court, Reiterova is quiet and hardworking, but finds time to enjoy American-style foods like BBQ and pizza while also sharing laughs with teammate Roxy Mendez.

A native of Luxembourg, Reiterova speaks six different languages (Luxembourgish, French, German, Spanish, Czech and English), but finds American slang to be the most difficult to master.

The No. 25 Knights will host No. 13 Old Dominion in their home opener this Saturday at 7 p.m. UCF is coming off of a 2-1 road win against FAU last Friday. Here are some notes on the Monarchs:

- The Monarchs finished last season with a 12-6-2 record after advancing to the second round in the NCAA Championship

- UCF is 1-0 all-time against the Monarchs after a victory in 2008

- Key players for the Knights to shut down will be senior forward Yannick Smith and junior midfielder Gideon Asante

- Smith was a Third Team All-American and ranked 9th nationally for goals scored in 2011

- Asante was named to the All-CAA First Team and is one of the nation's top assist leaders - The Monarchs have reached the NCAA Championship in each of the last two years

- After this season, Old Dominion will join Conference USA

- Last season, they finished second in the country in goals per game

- The Monarchs star goalie, Victor Francoz, is on the Hermann Trophy Watch List

- He posted a 1.38 goals against average with 86 saves and six shutouts last season

- Old Dominion is coached by four-time CAA Coach of the Year Alan Dawson, who is in his 16th season with the Monarchs

- Old Dominion is coming off of a 4-0 season opening victory against Navy last Saturday

With eight starters returning on offense this season, including three who made the Conference USA All-Freshman team last year, the Knights hope to have one of the top offensive units in the league.

Sophomore quarterback Blake Bortles will lead UCF's offensive attack. Last season, in limited playing time, Bortles threw for 958 yards and six touchdowns. Thursday's season opener at Akron will be Bortles' first start of his college career.

"It seems like he made a big step as far as leadership is concerned and knowledge on the field," senior fullback Billy Giovanetti said. "He's our leader and he's really shown that he knows what to do on the field and how to lead our team to score points."

UCF's roster has a total of 69 career rushing touchdowns returning, which is the most for any Conference USA team. The Knights also have arguably their most talented backfield in school history with Latavius Murray, Brynn Harvey and Storm Johnson.

Murray was the Knights' leading rusher last season and Harvey was the team's leading rusher in 2008 and 2009. Johnson was one of the University of Miami's top running backs in the 2010 recruiting class before he transferred to UCF. He is now eligible after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer regulations.

That talented trio, along with returning receivers Quincy McDuffie, Josh Reese, Rannell Hall and J.J. Worton, has been making the defense's job more difficult during practice.

"Instead of having one explosive guy on the field, they probably have three at a time now," senior defensive back Kemal Ishmael said. "They're hitting us with a combo, one-two punch."

That group of players isn't the only reason the Knights have looked impressive on offense through fall camp. The ball is getting in the hands of their playmakers.

"In ways there are changes [in the playbook], but in ways there are not. We're utilizing our personnel in the best way we can and putting the best players on the field who can make plays," Giovanetti said. "The team is really working together for a common goal and that's to get to the championship and win all of our games. Akron is the first team in the way. That's what's on our mind right now."

UCF senior A.J. Nelson had a busy August. He spent much of the month in London, interning for NBC Sports at the Olympics. Nelson then returned to Orlando, joining his teammates for preseason camp.

Holding practice inside Nicholson Fieldhouse Tuesday, UCF started to put some final touches on its game plan as it prepares to face Akron Thursday. 

UCF junior forward Tristan Spurlock had a busy summer, which included a team title and MVP honors at the famed Kenner League in Washington, D.C.

The Knights haven't played a game yet, but there are many qualities in this year's squad that remind head coach George O'Leary of one of the greatest teams in program history -- the 2010 Conference USA and Liberty Bowl Championship team.

O'Leary says one reason is the leadership ability of his seniors.

"It's very similar to 2010 where they weren't afraid to speak up - right or wrong," said O'Leary. "I do think this senior group will come in and say 'Coach, what about this or what about that.'"

The UCF head coach said the seniors are even taking charge of tasks such as dorm checks to set a good example for the underclassmen.

"I think it's a great point as far as taking charge and taking ownership of your team," said O'Leary. "That's how you get respect from your teammates and it keeps everyone on the same page."

O'Leary will look to his seniors for experience and leadership against a young Akron team on Thursday night. The Zips have a new head coach in Terry Bowden and are coming off a 1-11 season.

The Knights have won six consecutive season openers. The last opener UCF won on the read was a 25-23 win against NC State in 2007. O'Leary says having players who have been through many away games before makes him feel confident opening on the road.

"When you have a young club and they're traveling and everything is new, there can be some issues," O'Leary said. "But when you have some experienced kids that have been on the road before I think the kids understand what's supposed to happen from a format standpoint and an itinerary standpoint."

Last year, the Knights were winless on the road and dropped five of their six road games by a touchdown or less. O'Leary is using that to motivate this year's team.

"When you take the losses by seven points or less, those are games you have a chance to win and you have to finish plays," said O'Leary. "It's something to stress with the players this year and every play is an important play."

"I think the kids understand the importance of every game and obviously the first game you always go in with a pit in your stomach," continued O'Leary. "Right now they're treating each game as a big game and that's the way it should be."

For a rower, racing is divided into two very different seasons: fall and spring. Just as the weather in these two seasons differs greatly, so does the style of rowing. 

FALL

Fall races are roughly 3 miles long, and are executed in a style known as "head racing." A head race is essentially a race against the clock, with the objective being to complete the course with the fastest time. In a head race, boats are not started all at once, but in approximately ten second intervals. Head races are rowed at a much lower stroke rating, due to their length. Due to the long and often winding nature of these courses, it is especially important for a coxswain to steer the straightest and shortest course possible, since errors in steering will slow down the boat's overall time. The fall racing season is much shorter than the spring, with teams typically competing in two to three fall races a year.

                            SPRING 

Ask any rower what their favorite time of the year is, and their replies will be the same: the spring. Just as fall racing is slow and controlled, spring racing is its counterpart. In collegiate rowing, spring races are 2000m (just over one mile) and are often referred to as sprint races. Sprint races are completed in about seven minutes and are rowed at a much higher stroke rate than fall races. In a sprint race, all boats are lined up together and started at once. Unlike head racing, the racecourse is a straight 2000m and the objective is to cross the finish line first. At the start, all boats are aligned evenly, with about 5 feet between each competitor. After the official calls, "Attention, GO!," all boats essentially sprint off the line with one objective: to get their bow across the line first. Typically, the last 250m of a spring race is a dead sprint, although each boat will decide if and when to begin their sprint. It is in this last section of a sprint race that every athlete is emptying their tank. Until the horn sounds at the finish, rowers and coxswains are giving it their all to win their race. Sprint races are the ultimate adrenaline rush, and any rower will tell you that there is no other feeling like winning a sprint race. 

The spring season is much longer than the fall, with teams competing in on average seven races. Both seasons always prove to be grueling for rowers, coxswains, and coaches alike, but in the end it's an addictive sport that creates a unique bond for everyone involved.

After a two-goal performance in his UCF debut Friday at Florida Atlantic, UCF junior Deshorn Brown was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week Monday.

Head Coach George O'Leary met with the media for his first weekly press conference of the season Monday. He spoke about the upcoming trip to Akron, playing on the road and the importance of the season-opener. Below is a brief transcript of today's event.

TopDrawerSoccer.com released its Men's National Top 100 player list Friday and UCF junior McKauly Tulloch was listed at No. 44. A preseason All-America selection, Tulloch scored 15 goals in 2011.

The website also ranked the top players in Conference USA and Tulloch was fourth on the list. Senior defender Andrew Quintana was No. 11. 

There was no shortage of power in the Cal Ripken League this summer when UCF first baseman James Vasquez came up to the plate. The sweet-swinging lefty was named to the Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-America Team recently and he had the numbers to back up the high praise.

In just 32 games in the wood-bat league, here is the damage Vasquez did: .418 batting average, 33 runs, 46 hits, 11 doubles, 12 home runs, 42 RBIs, 30 walks, two stolen bases and just 26 strikeouts.

When you take a look deeper into the numbers Vasquez put up this summer, they would make Jonah Hill's character in "Moneyball" skip a heartbeat.  The league batting champ was on base in over half of his plate appearances (.552), slugged .845 and registered an OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging) of 1.397.

"It felt good to get on the field and do what I know I can do," Vasquez said after being asked about hitting his first homers of 2012. "At the plate, it just slowed down for me. I was able to see more pitches and have more at-bats. I was really relaxed up there."

Vasquez's homers weren't cheap by any means. Batting from the left side, it was about 320 feet to the left-field poll and 390 to dead center. The Palm City native admitted he wasn't pulling his homers either, showing off some opposite-field power.

With classes just beginning and fall workouts on the horizon, Vasquez took away a few lessons from his breakout summer that he hopes to utilize before heading into the 2013 season.

"One thing I learned this summer is that if you have a bad at-bat, don't carry it over," Vasquez noted. "Just take it one at-bat at a time. That's how I became more successful this summer."

With the 2012 regular season kicking off in just two days, UCF volleyball coach Todd Dagenais sat down with UCFAthletics.com and gave his thoughts about each position on the roster.

SETTERS - 2011 saw Rachel Vukson record the best season in school history during the rally scoring era with 1,377 assists en route to being named an AVCA All-American. In 2012, the Knights will look to redshirt sophomore Marie Reiterova and freshman Dana Faught to replace Vukson. Reiterova impressed the coaching staff during preseason camp with her ability to limit mistakes and set attackers up accurately and she will open the season as the lead setter. Faught is working hard to get up to game speed and will likely see more time as the season progresses.

MIDDLE BLOCKERS - The Knights will bring back all three of their top middle blockers from 2011 making this unit arguably the strongest on the team. Senior Tory McCutcheon is back after leading the team in attack percentage and block assists last season. Sophomore DeLaina Sarden will look to build upon her Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors from a year ago as she led the team with 18 block solos. Redshirt sophomore Kaye-Alese Green has made significant strides over the last year and will push the two incumbents for starting time.

OUTSIDE HITTERS - Redshirt junior Angelica Crump returns after earning AVCA All-American honors in 2011. Crump led the offense in kills (499), kills per set (4.34), attempts (1,224) and points (529.5). Senior lefty Evija Vilde maintains her spot as the OPP after finishing last season with a career-high 382 kills, 205 digs, 50 blocks and 425 points. Sophomore Ashley Gianlenios and redshirt freshman Kayla Keller will provide scoring depth on the outside. Gialenios, who was called the "most improved player" from preseason camp, notched 110 kills, 89 digs, 44 blocks, four service aces and 140.5 points in a reserve role last season. Keller, who's 2011 season was cut short by injury, shined in the 2012 Black and Gold scrimmage and finished her freshman season playing in 38 sets with 119 kills (.222), 81 digs, 12 blocks and 134.5 points.

LIBEROS - The competition for starting libero was fierce, but senior Meredith Murphy came out on top after a strong camp. Murphy broke her own school record in 2011 in digs per set (4.48) after notching a career-high 515 for the season. She also owns 1495 career digs, second all-time at UCF behind Miriam Metzcus's 1,644. Murphy was pushed to the limit by fellow senior Dani Harrison who Dagenais called "our second starting libero". Harrison, a defensive specialist who played in every set in 2011, finished with 275 digs a season ago and will likely be called upon to maintain her high level of defensive effort. Junior Roxy Mendez has been worked at all three spots on the defensive backline and will likely see action every match. Freshmen Dani Jenkins and Kaci Thompson will provide depth as they continue to adjust to the speed of the college game.

-UCF started Tuesday's session on the practice fields where punters Jamie Boyle and Caleb Houston were going to-to-toe, and the Knights also worked on some installation. They then moved inside Bright House Networks Stadium for a tag-off scrimmage. This not only allowed the Knights to get a feel for their home turf, but also gave a few members of the coaching staff a chance to sit in the press box to observe the action.

Dreams of gold ended for the USA Baseball Women's National Team as they were defeated 3-0 by Japan in the championship game of the IBAF World Cup. Despite the loss, the U.S. and two Knights returned home with a silver medal.

"Silver is obviously not what we wanted, but our team played hard and we just could not put a small rally together and score a few runs," USA head coach and UCF assistant coach Ruben Felix said.

The title game was dominated by pitching as each team got strong efforts from their starting pitchers. However, it was Japan who came through with a two-out hit in the third inning to take a lead it would never relinquish.

"They (Japan) caught a big break with two outs. We got a strikeout to end the inning, but the ball got away from the catcher and the runner reached," Felix explained. "Then they had two hits and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to score a run and then a blooper single scored two more runs."

Former UCF shortstop Natalie Land was very productive throughout the tournament as the team's leadoff hitter. Land led Team USA in walks and finished second on the team in runs scored. Land also showed off her trademark speed by leading all tournament players with eight stolen bases.

"I'm proud of our team and proud of Natalie. She was great for us at the top of the lineup," Felix concluded. "Japan just played better defense, pitched better and had some timely hits to beat us."

The Women's National Team finished World Cup play with a 6-3 record. It kept its streak of medaling alive, finishing on the podium in all five IBAF Women's World Cups.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Tuesday's update on the UCF football team. The Knights are scheduled to have a closed practice today which will include a tag-off scrimmage.

-UCF went with shoulder pads for the first day of the fall semester, and the entire team got reps Monday.

-The best catch of the day came when running back Storm Johnson pulled in a ball from Blake Bortles while diving in the back of the endzone.

-The first edition of the George O'Leary Radio Show will take place Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings on University Blvd. If you cannot make it out to be a part of the live audience, the show airs on WYGM 740-AM The Game in Orlando, and is hosted by Marc Daniels. Buffalo Wild Wings will be offering food and drink specials, while prizes will be given away weekly for both callers and members of the audience.

-Quincy McDuffie and Rannell Hall have a combined 2,633 kickoff return yards entering 2012. In UCF single-season history, McDuffie ranks second (944 in 2009) and third (869 in 2010) while Hall ranks sixth (714 in 2011). The record was set by Ted Wilson with 952 return yards in 1984.

UCF will conclude the exhibition portion of its schedule Sunday when the Knights host Florida Tech at 2 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex. Admission is free for the contest.

The Knights will be playing their third exhibition contest in six days. On Friday in Orlando, UCF rallied to pickup a 2-2 draw versus Mercer. Both of UCF's goals came in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Deshorn Brown scored to cut the Bears' lead to a goal and then assisted on McKauly Tulloch's tying score.

Following the matchup with Florida Tech, UCF will open the regular season at Florida Atlantic on Nov. 24. The squad's home opener is Sept. 1 against Old Dominion. 

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF Football FanFest has finally arrived Saturday. The Knights will hold their final open team practice at 2:30 p.m. before FanFest begins at 5 p.m. inside Bright House Networks Stadium.

-During practice, fans are asked to not take notes, pictures or video.

-If inclement weather is in the area, FanFest will be moved inside Nicholson Fieldhouse.

-On Saturday, those wearing gold shirts will be allowed to participate in the team photo at approximately 5 p.m. Head to Gate 17 at the Southwest corner of the stadium to be in this year's photo, which will be made available on UCFPhotos.com.

-There also will be an opportunity to sign up at the open practice and at the start of FanFest for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the home opener against FIU Sept. 15 at 4 p.m.

-All events are FREE to the public, as well as FREE parking in Bright House Networks Stadium lots E6 and E7, which are the grass lots on the East side of the facility.

-Along with Barnes & Noble selling merchandise, posters and schedule cards also will be available during the day, and the UCF Spirit Program with Knightro will be on hand as well.

-During Friday's practice, which was the final night session of the preseason, UCF had a light workout without shoulder pads and ended the night about an hour early.

-Defensive end Cam Henderson continued to beat the offensive line and get to the UCF quarterbacks Friday, however quarterback Blake Bortles' arm was on display as he delivered several accurate passes throughout the night.

-On consecutive 7v7 plays near the goal line, wideout Breshad Perriman made a leaping grab on a pass from Tyler Gabbert in the endzone, and Quincy McDuffie hauled in a touchdown pass by making a diving catch and dragging one foot in bounds.

-After practice, the entire team sang "Happy Birthday" to head coach George O'Leary.

After taking a month off from pitching following the end of the Knights' 2012 season in May, Conference USA Freshman and Pitcher of the Year Mackenzie Audas traveled to Virginia to play in the USSSA Women's Fast-Pitch Softball World Series in Botetourt County, near Roanoke.

Audas pitched for the Virginia Legends during the event and added two more accolades to her ever-growing resume as her squad dominated the 12-team field en route to winning the championship. On top of the team's success, Audas was named the Pitching MVP of the tournament after pitching four perfect innings in the championship game.

"Considering she was not in mid-season form she was exceptional," head coach Bobby Willis explained. "She was perfect in the championship game and she pitched real well in our scrimmage, pool play and the double elimination. UCF usually has good pitchers but Mackenzie is special."

Each of the 12 teams in the event were allowed to field players with ages ranging from 18 to 32. The Legends featured former professional softball players Trena Peel and Amber Jackson, with Peel taking offensive MVP honors for the event, as well as former Florida Gator and current Missouri Tiger Sami Fagan earning the overall tournament MVP.

The Legends dominated the 12-team field en route to the championship. The team went 7-1 overall and outscored their opponents' 55-3.

"We appreciate coach Willis giving Mackenzie the opportunity to play summer ball in such a quality tournament, UCF softball head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said. "We hope she can pitch in the event again next summer as well. I am thrilled at how well she pitched."

It's rabbit season...duck season...SOCCER SEASON!

Opening day is upon us Knight fans. And what better way to kick it off than a match against rival USF? But before game time commences at 7:30 tonight in Tampa, the No. 12 UCF women's soccer team made positive headlines once again this week.

Graham Hays of ESPNW broke down the 2012 season and mentioned UCF as a team to watch. Hays writes:

"Central Florida: Last season was tremendous for teams from beyond the traditional power conferences in women's college soccer, with Central Florida, Memphis, Pepperdine and Wisconsin-Milwaukee among the programs that spent much of the season climbing the polls. Central Florida reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament and eliminated North Carolina in Chapel Hill in a Sweet 16 penalty shootout. With nine returning players who logged at least 1,000 minutes last season, the Golden Knights are among the best positioned to try and prove last season's upswing was no fluke."

Our fearless leader has already been named to the All-Conference USA Preseason Team, two Preseason All-American lists and the Hermann Trophy Watch List. On Friday, she appeared on Soccer America's list of the top 100 players in the country. This ranking - which includes sophomore, juniors and seniors - includes the highest ranked college soccer players in the nation and will be updated weekly.

Jewell clocks in at No. 31 as the highest ranked Conference USA player. She is joined by fellow conference members Lizzy Simonin (No. 38) and Christabel Oduro (No. 82) of Memphis.

-Practice today is on tap for 6:30-8:30 p.m., but may start early.

-Author and former NFL standout Tim Green, who gave a terrific speech as the guest speaker during Thursday's Countdown to Kickoff Luncheon, was in attendance for practice as well.

-The offensive line stepped up, giving quarterbacks a lot of protection throughout UCF's drills.

-At the end of practice, an afternoon storm moved in and set off the weather alarm. The Knights decided to not go into Nicholson Fieldhouse, but ended practice a couple of minutes early.

-Head Coach George O'Leary after Thursday's practice: "We are trying to get down to the two-deep look and really putting the pressure on the kids out there competing. ... I think the kids responded and that's what you are looking for, is competition out there. I thought they competed well. That's why when the weather came I sent them in. We got done what we wanted to see on film, and we will react from there.

"I'm never satisfied (with solidifying a two-deep). I want to still see competition from some of the ones and twos, and the twos and threes, because I don't think anything is done until next Tuesday. I'll have some type of (closed) segmented scrimmage, and we will make some decisions. And next Thursday we will get ready for Akron."

Thursday was a busy day at The Venue for the UCF volleyball team. With the adjoining UCF Arena holding the Countdown to Kickoff Luncheon at the same time as practice No. 13, the hallways and balconies surrounding the volleyball courts were filled with football players and personnel, cheer and dance team members, staff from the athletic department and even Knightro himself made an appearance.

Head coach Todd Dagenais used this opportunity to teach his players a valuable lesson; adaptability.

With the areas surrounding the court filled with athletes and staff from other sports, background noise limited the amount of hands-on teaching Dagenais and the rest of the coaching staff could do. With practice time at a premium, rather than have a wasted practice, the coaches decided to turn a potentially negative situation into a positive one.

So the team decided to turn on the scoreboards, crank up the volume of the in-house stereo system and allow the team to go through a mock-game preparation before the final practice of preseason camp and the team's last intra-squad scrimmage.

The players were put through their full pregame warmup routine, complete with 20-minute countdown clock. Just as they would for a regular season game, the players went into the hallway with nine minutes left on the clock for their own private team huddle and emerged with three minutes left ready for action. 

Dagenais stressed that he wanted to simulate as close to a real gameday experience for the players at Saturday's Black and Gold scrimmage.

The regular season will kick off in just 11 days against Creighton in the USF Invitational in Tampa on Aug. 24. The home opener takes place Aug. 31 as the team hosts Columbia in the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic.

UCF will play its second preseason contest Friday when the Knights host Mercer at the UCF Soccer Complex. Head coach Bryan Cunningham talked about his expectations for the matchup with the Bears.

-Today's luncheon will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and parking is available for free in Garage D near the UCF Arena. There will be a silent auction, food, entertainment and an inside look at the Knights from head coach George O'Leary and his staff.

A huge crowd was on hand Wednesday evening as the UCF Victory Club held a social inside the New Traditions National Bank in downtown Orlando. The crowd, which included Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, gathered to support the UCF men's basketball program and learn about the future of the Knights from head coach Donnie Jones.

Created in 2010, the UCF Victory Club provides fan and financial support to the men's basketball program. The club hosts exclusive functions throughout the year and provides numerous opportunities for members to network.

Nearly 100 individuals, including some former UCF student-athletes, packed the bank for the event Wednesday.

"It was a great event and we are grateful for all of the support," Jones said. "The victory club is a great program and it is important in getting the word out about all of the wonderful things that are going on at UCF, not only athletically, but academically and in the community as well.  Victory club members play a vital role in our program and their contributions are appreciated."

UCF Softball assistant coach Ruben Felix is having an action-packed summer coming off a 39-win campaign and NCAA tournament appearance with the Knights. Felix was tabbed to lead the USA Baseball Women's National Team as they competed for the IBA World Cup in Edmonton, Alberta.

"I am really excited about this team we put together," commented Felix. "This is a gold-medal winning team and there is no reason we can't bring home the gold."

After three rounds of intense tryouts in San Francisco, Calif., New Lenox, Ill. and Cary, N.C.,  Felix and his staff finalized a 20-woman roster earlier this month. Appearing on the roster is one very familiar name to UCF Softball fans, former shortstop and all-time steals leader, Natalie Land.

Three other names that Knights supporters might recognize are three athletes from Conference USA rival Tulsa; Jill Barrett, Samantha Cobb and Caitlin Everett.

Team USA is currently 4-1 in pool play with victories over The Netherlands, Australia, Japan and Cuba. The U.S. will take on Chinese Taipei on Thursday and Venezuela on Friday with the medal rounds commencing on Saturday.

"We've gotten better every day," remarked Felix. "We feel like our pitchers are throwing a lot more strikes and are in the zone more. The hitters are staying back and really driving some balls. Defensively, we've made some good plays in the outfield and diving plays on the infield. Overall execution on the bases, we are a lot better. It has been a great positive week."

-Late Tuesday night, sophomore Rannell Hall was selected to the Jet Award Watch List, which honors the best return specialist in college football. The award is in its second year and is named after Heisman Trophy winner Johnny "The Jet" Rodgers. The winner will be chosen by a vote of the selection committee in December. There were a total of 29 players on the watch list.

On a blazing hot Florida afternoon, the UCF football donned shoulder pads and shorts in its practice from 3-5 p.m. Before practice wrapped up,  thunderstorms rolled through the east side of Orlando causing the Knights to finish their final segments inside the Nicholson Fieldhouse. 

Impressed with the UCF volleyball team's defense after nine preseason camp practices and its quality work during last Saturday's Black and Gold scrimmage, head coach Todd Dagenais and his coaching staff looked to change things up during practice #10. With just one full-team practice scheduled for Tuesday, Dagenais put the team through a series of service and receiving skills with the primary goal being to get better in the transition aspect of offense.

One of the biggest challenges facing the team during week one of camp was a lack of options offensively after receiving a serve. The coaches were looking for more quality digs from the back line, which would allow the setters to get their footwork into the best position possible for more accurate sets that would set up easier and more effective attacks from the hitters.

When attending practice, one of the first things that jumps out at you is how competitive the players are during the drills. The reason for that is the coaching staff fosters a very competitive environment through the "Knights Points" system. Every drill is treated like a competition and the top finisher in each drill earns points that are recorded at each and every practice. At the end of each semester, the leader in "Knights Points" is rewarded with an engraved dagger as a trophy and crowned "Queen of the Court". With just four more practices until the end of camp, I expect the battle to see who gets the dagger above their locker first to remain intense.

It seems like every day, the No. 12 UCF women's soccer team is recognized in some way with another preseason accolade.

Seventeen days from now, the UCF football team will be battling Akron in its season-opener. The Knights were back on the practice field under the lights after a much-welcomed day of rest on Sunday.

Each year, we try to do something unique to help with our team cohesion.  Last year, because we were a team that really "liked" each other, I wanted to bring out a more competitive side.  Therefore we went to a local paintball yard and had some good paintball wars.  We quickly found out who the competitors were, and we also found out who were the players that needed to compete harder or smarter.  They were the players bleeding from various spots on their body....lol.

This year, our entire team building program has been very carefully manufactured.  About two weeks ago I sent an email to the team telling them, "This pre-season training camp is about preparing a worthy champion.  It's going about taking a piece of raw iron and collectively hammering it into a finely crafted piece of steel ... forged by fire, shined by relentlessness, and sharpened into a deadly edge with discipline.  This pre-season will not be easy, but we will walk out of it worthy of sitting on a championship throne."

On Friday morning we held our annual photo session at 7:45am then immediately boarded the vans for a day trip up to the Pioneer Settlement north of Deland.  They have a working blacksmith shop up there run by a passionate young artist named Jordan Thomas.  Along with his colleague Leslie Sharp and brother Josiah Thomas, Jordan immediately started working with the players on the understanding the concept of metal work....starting with making the fire that will burn in excess of 2500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Obviously there is an inherent danger working with coal heated to this temperature, and with metal heated to a red or white hot glow.  This danger was very real, and had to be respected at all times.  I was very impressed with our intensity and focus, but found it very interesting when we started to get small careless burns as our mental focus waned.  It was a great lesson in maintaining our focus for a long period of time until we finish.

The team spent the morning learning how to heat the metal then pound it into basic shapes.  The first projects was to take a metal rod, heat it, then pound it into the pointed end.  From there they worked on pounding and twisting the metal into a decorative hook to hang on the wall.  It took close to 3 hours and putting the metal into the fire 15-20 times before this could be achieved.  All of this in 90 plus degree heat AWAY from the forging stations (nearly 110 close to them).

The UCF volleyball team took the court this weekend for the first Black and Gold scrimmage of the preseason. With just five practices under their belts, head coach Todd Dagenais expected to see some struggles and overall rough play. However the team, which is bringing back 10 letterwinners, showed they are ahead of expectations, in large part due to their experience.  Dagenais was particularly impressed with the defensive effort in the middle as the two squads combined for 21 blocks.

One of the coaching staff's biggest goals of this preseason camp is to find the team's next starting setter. Freshman Dana Faught and redshirt sophomore Marie Reiterova are both looking to replace AVCA All-American honorable mention Rachel Vukson who set the single-season school record for assists with 1,377. Both setters played two sets with each team so they could get valuable experience playing with every player on the roster. Faught finished the scrimmage with 49 assists, eight digs and one solo block. Reiterova tallied 44 assists, three digs and three solo blocks.

Former University of Florida All-American and current assistant head coach Michelle Chatman also took part in the team scrimmage as a member of the gold team. She finished the scrimmage with nine kills showing the young players that affectionately referred to her as "grandma" that she can still go.

"30 years old and she's still one of the best players in the gym," Dagenais said.

After four fast paced and energetic sets, Dagenais allowed the team to have some fun in the fifth and final game. The seniors were allowed to sit out and the younger players were put into random spots and were allowed to do things on the court they are not normally asked to do. Dagenais called it a reward for all the hard work the team put it during the week. 

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Sunday's update on the UCF football team. The Knights will not be practicing Sunday after having sessions from Aug. 1-11.

-On Saturday, UCF kept the shoulder pads in the locker room during the 11th practice of the preseason.

-Josh Reese and Kevin Garvy notched solid touchdown receptions during the first half of the session before the Knights held a 35-minute tag-off scrimmage.

-It was the first time UCF held a segmented scrimmage with the coaches and all of the players on the sideline (the offense usually stands behind the line of scrimmage during practices).

-The defense looked solid with the offense unable to produce points until eventually Blake Bortles hit Quincy McDuffie on a 37-yard touchdown pass, and Tyler Gabbert found Jeff Godfrey twice on an ensuing drive, topped off with a 30-yard TD catch by Godfrey.

-Freshman cornerback Jacoby Glenn had several key break-ups throughout the day, while sophomore cornerback Jonathan Davis had two during the scrimmage and senior linebacker Jonathan Davis notched an impressive sack.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The daily report from the UCF football team for Saturday, Aug. 11. The Black and Gold will get practice No. 11 underway today at 3:15 p.m., and it will last until approximately 5:30 p.m.

-UCF practiced inside Nicholson Fieldhouse Friday due to the weather. It also went with full pads a day after going in just helmets.

-On defense during Friday's drills, sophomore safety Clayton Geathers had an interception for the third time in four days, senior linebacker Jonathan Davis produced a big hit on running back Storm Johnson behind the line of scrimmage, senior defensive end Troy Davis was quick into the backfield during segment 19 and freshman cornerback Jacoby Glenn turned in a diving interception on a long pass into the endzone.

-Over on offense, sophomore quarterback Blake Bortles found classmate Rannell Hall during a 7v7 drill, who outran sophomore cornerback Jordan Ozerities for the touchdown reception. Meanwhile, senior running back Brynn Harvey had a strong breakout run early in the evening.

-The practice ended with 50-yard field goals by sophomore kickers Shawn Moffitt and Sean Galvin. Moffitt first connected on an attempt which would have been good from about 55 yards, only to have junior E.J. Dunston block his next kick. Galvin would convert a 52-yarder, yet his next kick fell short.

With their practice scheduled for this evening, the Knights had time Friday for its annual photo day. UCF took its head shots and team photo, and the senior class got in front of the camera with the UCF video services staff to film some promotional clips. 

Team photo day can mean many different things to players. Those feelings ring especially true to the athletes on the UCF volleyball team. For the Knights four seniors - Meredith Murphy, Evija Vilde, Dani Harrison, Tory McCutcheon - the moment was equal parts exciting and bittersweet. 

After shooting promotional spots for the UCF video services department, the four seniors decided to "hand stand" at attention for their final senior picture.

Photo day was also the first opportunity to meet the new players on the Knights' roster.  Freshmen Dani Jenkins, Kaci Thompson and Dana Faught got their first official UCF pictures and got some good natured ribbing from their teammates after their family portrait style group shot. The moment was especially thrilling for Faught and Thompson as they are former high school teammates and close friends.

As photo day wrapped up, the team loaded into vans and hit the road for a team activity. We'll have pictures and video from this team-building experience later this week.

Tomorrow is a big day for the Knights as the team will play the first of two scheduled Black and Gold scrimmages. The intra-squad action takes place this Saturday at 3:30 in The Venue and is open to the public.

-Freshman wide receiver Breshad Perriman had two nice catches during Thursday's session, the first of which came on a 30-yard toss from Blake Bortles as Perriman made a diving catch in the left corner of the endzone. The second was on a deep ball down the middle from Rob Calabrese.

-Senior running back Latavius Murray also produced a jaw-dropping catch when he pulled in a Bortles pass with one arm on the right sideline as a defender was draped on him.

-The Voice of the Knights, Marc Daniels, was in attendance for the second-straight practice.

-UCF has a combined 70 rushing touchdowns returning this year (including Storm Johnson who had one while with Miami). Latavius Murray leads the way with 22, Jeff Godfrey has 19 and Brynn Harvey has 18. The 70 rushing TDs lead all of Conference USA.

The UCF women's soccer team gathered at Buffalo Wild Wings on University Blvd. Thursday to watch team USA take on Japan in the Olympics final. A full photo gallery can be found on our Facebook page.

Day 2 of UCF volleyball's preseason camp at The Venue opened up with a series of intense footwork drills led by strength and conditioning coach John Ellis. These drills helped head coach Todd Dagenais and his coaching staff stress the importance of having quick feet and low defensive positioning.

The most spirited portion of day 2 took place when the team was separated into two squads of seven. Each group of players had five minutes to knock 12 chairs out of play using just their serves. 

Team one exploded in celebration as they finished the drill with just three seconds remaining on the clock. Their jubilation would be short lived; however, as team two toppled their score by completing the drill with 29 seconds left on the clock.

We'll check back in with more tomorrow as the team has photo day in the morning as well as day 3 of practice as they continue to prepare for the first Black and Gold scrimmage that takes place this Saturday at 3:30 in The Venue.

Following UCF's second practice of the preseason, senior defender Andrew Quintana talked about the team's start to camp and earning a spot on the Conference USA Preseason Team.

-UCF kicked off the second week of preseason drills outside Wednesday and got into individual drills before heading inside Nicholson Fieldhouse due to an approaching weather system.

-The best catch of the day was on a Rob Calabrese pass to Jacques Mackeroy as he made a leaping grab to end segment 15, causing the offense to erupt.

-UCF's defense forced a pair of fumbles Wednesday, but running back Latavius Murray displayed impressive footwork throughout the session.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - News and notes for practice day No. 7 of the 2012 UCF football preseason camp. Practice today will run from 3:15-5:30 p.m. as the Knights are quickly approaching the season-opener at Akron Aug. 30.

-The 2012 UCF football posters have been delivered, and the best chance to pick them up will be at the annual FanFest Saturday, Aug. 18. More details about the event will be announced when they are finalized.

-Monday was the second night practice of the preseason. Some highlights from the session:

-Senior linebacker Jonathan Davis was the most vocal on the defense Monday, and senior punter Jamie Boyle, who has never punted in his collegiate career, had a couple 55-yard punts.

-On offense, senior offensive lineman Phil Smith received a lot of praise from the coaching staff during Monday's drills. Smith is in his first year as a Knight after transferring from Georgia Tech.

-One of the best catches of the night came on a Blake Bortles pass to Quincy McDuffie as the wide receiver leapt over A.J. Bouye for a 35-yard grab that ignited the offense. Josh Reese also hauled in a deep ball, this one from Tyler Gabbert on the left sideline.

-Defensive ends Victor Gray and Cam Henderson each produced quality sacks, and middle linebacker Terrance Plummer broke up a pass over the middle intended for McDuffie, which almost resulted in an interception.

The UCF football team was back under the lights in full pads as it began its second week of fall camp in preparation for the season opener at Akron on Aug. 30. Today the Sights and Sounds blog features offensive lineman Justin McCray, quarterback Blake Bortles and a video interview with linebacker Terrance Plummer. The sophomore from Orange Park is in contention for best hair on the team, but we will let you be the judge! 

Hard to believe, but we're only six days away from the UCF women's soccer team's first test of the 2012 season when the Knights host Florida on Saturday at 7 p.m. in their only exhibition match of the year.

-During Sunday's practice, senior linebacker D.J. Williams intercepted a Tyler Gabbert pass by ranging to his right and pulling in a ball near the left sideline.

Although he spent the majority of the summer in Orlando, Tristan Spurlock made several trips home to the Washington, D.C., area, and the return to the nation's capital was certainly worthwhile from a basketball standpoint. The forward, who is entering his junior campaign at UCF, played in seven total games in the famed Kenner League and helped his team claim the championship title.

Kenner League games are played at McDonough Arena on the Georgetown campus and feature college and professional players from the D.C. area. Former Kenner League players include Allen Iverson, Alonzo Mourning, Steve Francis, Dikembe Mutombo, Gilbert Arena and Othella Harrington.

Spurlock averaged around 23 points over the summer and earned MVP honors after totaling 20 points in the championship game.

Kenner League games are played on over the weekend, and the schedule allowed Spurlock to compete as a member of DCX, a squad that was the only team in the league that featured only college players. His teammates included Jabril Trawick and Greg Whittington of Georgetown and Jamal Olaswere of LIU-Brooklyn.

In the championship contest, DCX posted a 109-81 win over Pro Athletics. Former Knight Mike Battle played for Pro Athletics.

Spurlock feels that his play in the Kenner League will serve as a springboard into the 2012-13 campaign for the Knights.

"This was a good opportunity," he said. "I had the chance to focus on a lot of the things that I was working on all summer. It was a chance for me to be more aggressive. I wasn't just a shooter. I had the chance to push the ball and take the ball to the basket."

-UCF's first two practices this summer featured just helmets, while on Friday and Saturday the Knights donned shoulder pads. So far, one practice has been held inside Nicholson Fieldhouse while the last three have been outside. Today's forecast includes about a 50% chance of rain.

-Sr. C Jordan Rae after Saturday's practice: "This is one of the most talented groups since I've been here. We have an awesome coaching staff, and we should be able to do something with it. As far as the offensive lines goes, we are one of the more experienced groups out there. That cohesiveness definitely makes a big difference."

-In terms of all-purpose yards, kick returner/wide receiver Rannell Hall had zero after five games last year. Seven games later, Hall racked up 759 all-purpose yards and finished behind only running back Latavius Murray who led the Knights in 2011 with 860.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Saturday's update on the UCF football team. The Knights return to their normal schedule today as they will practice from 3:15-5:30 p.m., and it will be the second-straight day in shoulder pads.

-On Friday, UCF moved its practice to the evening, and donned the shoulder pads for the first time in the preseason.

-With the offensive line paving the way, running back Storm Johnson dazzled early in Friday's session, consistently running by the defense.

The Knights had plenty to celebrate in their record-breaking 2011 campaign that saw them win 20 matches for the first time since 2003 and notch a program-best 12 wins in Conference USA. We will continue counting down the top-five moments from the 2011 season leading up to the Knights' 2012 opener against Creighton in the USF Invitational on Aug. 24 with No. 2: Freshmen Duo Dominates

Setting the Stage

Playing in a venue that no previous UCF team had won in before, the Knights knew their match with SMU inside Moody Coliseum would be no walk in the park. After dropping the first match of three on the road to end the regular season, a bounce back against the Mustangs would need to happen for the Knights to eye their 19th win of the season and keep their postseason chances alive.

By Nov. 20, freshmen DeLaina Sarden and Ashley Gialenios had asserted themselves as forces in the Knights' lineup. No longer were these rookies looked at as unproven youngsters, they were counted on to help UCF achieve its season-long goals. The epic showdown with SMU featured a little bit of everything, including a game-sealing block by the duo of Sarden and Gialenios.

Defining Moments

UCF raced out to an early 1-0 lead when it clinched the first set, 25-21. SMU promptly evened up the match with a 25-18 victory in the second stanza. The two teams went back and forth once again with UCF taking the third, 25-20, only to have the Mustangs respond with a 25-12 win in the fourth.

Pushed to a fifth set of the sixth and final time in 2011, UCF and SMU were tied at 2-2 before the Knights went on a 7-0 run fueled by Meredith Murphy on the serve. The Mustangs chipped away at the lead before tying it up at 13-all. With the first team to 15 points having the opportunity to win the match, every point was critical.

Tied at 16-all, Sarden gave the Knights their third match point when she smacked down her 13th kill of the day. After junior Evija Vilde served it up, SMU's Caroline Young tried to attack the freshmen duo only to be denied by Sarden and Gialenios and clinch the Knights' 19th win of the season.

Aside from the stellar play of the two freshmen, Angelica Crump smashed a career-high 24 kills while Rachel Vukson hoisted 52 assists and dug out 15 shots for her 15th double-double of the season. A total of four Knights registered double-digit digs, including Murphy who led the way with 17.

UCF found a way to win the match despite hitting under .200 for just the eighth time on the year (.116). Head coach Todd Dagenais was thrilled with his team's ability to win even when the offense isn't hitting for a high percentage.

"That was a classic example of really grinding it out," Dagenais said. "We didn't do a lot of pretty things. What we did do is just worked really hard. People are going to look at the stats and they will show that SMU won. I think the difference for us was that we had a ton of resolve. Literally, that last set could've gone either way. We just found a way to get a break and make a huge stunt-block play at the very end."

-Tonight's practice will be the first in which the Knights will put on the shoulder pads.

-UCF's first head coach in program history, Don Jonas, was out at practice Thursday and spoke to the team as well. He coached the Knights from 1979-81 and finished with a 14-12-1 overall record.

-The Knights received five votes in the 2012 USA Today Preseason Coaches' Poll, which would put them in 41^st place just ahead of FIU and Missouri which earned three votes each.

-Senior wide receiver/kick returner Quincy McDuffie was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List Thursday. The award is handed out to the nation's most versatile player. McDuffie was one of only three players from Conference USA who was selected to the watch list.

-In UCF's six home games last year, Brynn Harvey rushed for 397 yards while Latavius Murray totaled 394 yards. In terms of average per carry, Murray had a 7.9 average while Harvey posted a 5.0 mark.

What to Look For

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Thursday marks the only morning practice of the preseason currently on the schedule. The Knights will take the field from 9:10-11:30 a.m., as they will conduct their annual media day later during the day.

-UCF kicked off preseason camp Wednesday, as it was the first time the 2012 Knights came together as one on the gridiron.

-If the weather cooperates, Thursday will be UCF's first outdoor practice of camp. Lightning around the UCF campus forced yesterday's session into Nicholson Fieldhouse.

-The Knights will be in helmets, no shoulder pads, for the second-straight day.

-Head Coach George O'Leary is set to appear on Tuck and O'Neill on ESPN 1080 in Orlando Thursday at 5:45 p.m.

-Redshirt sophomore quarterback Blake Bortles ranked third in UCF single-season history last year with a 153.88 passer efficiency rating.

What to Look For

-On tap for Friday, UCF is slated to put on the shoulder pads for the first time. Practice has been moved to 6:50 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.

-A reminder that UCF FanFest will take place Saturday, Aug. 18. Tentatively, practice will start at 2:30 with FanFest getting underway at 5 p.m.

Day one of practice is in the books for the UCF football team. After each player checked in yesterday and had their first team meetings, they took to the Nicholson Fieldhouse looking fresh in their pristine jerseys and shorts for their first day practicing as a unit since April 14.

-Running backs coach Danny Barrett will be conducting a phone interview today with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they will be reflecting on the 2002 Labour Day Classic victory against Winnipeg. Barrett was the head coach of the Roughriders from 2000-06.

-Assistant head coach Brent Key will be joining AlumKnight Live on 740 AM in Orlando today at 6:30 p.m.
