Women's Rowing Heads to Texas, Rollins This Weekend

March 15, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Looking to build upon successful season openers, the UCF women's rowing team splits this weekend as the open and novice squads head to the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas and the lightweight and another group of novice rowers remain in Central Florida for the Rollins Tri-Meet.

The varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, and novice eight compete against familiar opponents in a dual format on Town Lake in Austin, Texas. The Golden Knights' schedule begins with Iowa on Friday, March 16 at 5:50 p.m. and continues on Saturday, March 17 with a morning session against Kansas State and afternoon races against Duke. UCF caps off the event Sunday morning against host Texas.

UCF faced all four teams at the Aramark South/Central Sprints last spring, coming in second to Duke in the varsity eight and Texas in the varsity four. The Golden Knights beat both Iowa and Kansas State in the second varsity eight and took first place over the two schools in the novice eight.

During the fall, the Black & Gold defeated Texas but lost to Duke at the Rivana Romp in Virginia, while it beat the Blue Devils at the Head of the Hooch in Tennessee.

Although they kicked off the season at the beginning of the month, the Golden Knights' boats have posted times during practice sessions that are within range of their fastest ones from late May of 2006.

Meanwhile, the lightweight eight, lightweight four, junior varsity four, novice eight and novice four return to Lake Maitland in Winter Park, Florida for the third - and final - time this spring to compete at the Rollins Tri-Meet on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. The Golden Knights are slated to race against Rollins, Jacksonville, Georgia, and Nova Southeastern.

Tentative lineups for the boats in of this weekend's races are attached below. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
