ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Week one for the UCF baseball team's fall camp is about to come to a close, and the Knights completed their final scrimmage of their initial week Tuesday morning. Senior Shane Brown and junior Kevin Vasquez each pounded out home runs in a four-inning affair that finished with a total of nine hits and seven runs between the Gray and Gold squads.
An All-Conference USA Second Team member a year ago, Brown led the Knights with a .341 average and 20 doubles in the spring. He showed a little bit of that Tuesday, going 1-for-1 with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Brown has seen time at both corner outfield positions, third base and first base this fall.
"It's coming along for me but I just have to keep getting better, competing, working hard and doing everything right each day," said Brown. "I'm a senior so I'm more relaxed (compared to previous fall seasons) and getting more confidence at the plate. I'm also trying to become a leader out here. But we all need to bring it to the field every day and that's very important."
Brown may have paced the Gray team to the 5-2 victory, but junior Keith Simon went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run, sophomore Alex Friedrich was 1-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases, a RBI and a run and freshman Ronnie Richardson added an infield hit, two stolen bases and two runs scored as well.
Gray was backed on the hill by two innings each from juniors Alex Besaw and lefty Nick Cicio. For Cicio, he completed his outing by allowing just one baserunner, a two-out walk in the final inning.
On the Gold side, Vasquez collected two hits including his two-run dinger in his first at-bat. Senior Chris Duffy and freshman Anthony Caronia also added base hits for the offense while freshman Darnell Sweeney drew two walks.
Southpaw Brian Adkins and senior Matt Goodyear worked the four innings for Gold's pitchers. Details of the scrimmage can be found below.
The Knights will kick off week two with a Thursday morning practice and scrimmage beginning at 8:15 a.m.
