LEXINGTON, Ky. - Playing in rainy and windy conditions, the UCF women's golf team opened the Kentucky Wildcat Invitational Saturday. Through the first two rounds, the Golden Knights sat in ninth place with a 641 (+65) on the par-72 University Club Big Blue Course, highlighted by two impressive performances on the links.
The Golden Knights were three strokes behind Birmingham Southern and host Kentucky when round one came to a close, totaling a 332 (+44). But UCF fared much better in round two, carding the third-best team score with a 309 (+21) to jump ahead of Kentucky and Mississippi State. Louisville leads the event with a 630 (+54).
Sophomore Mayule Tomimbang's (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway) nine-over 81 in the first round was followed up by a four-over 76 to move to 12th on the individual leaderboard. She was joined by freshman Sara Hurwitch (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion), who fired an 83 to open the tournament. Hurwitch then tied the second round's third-lowest total, a two-over 74 to move from 40th all the way to 12th.
In her opening round, freshman Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) recorded a 40 on the front nine and a 42 on the back for an 82. She shot one stroke better in the next round to tie for 37th (163, +19). Senior Holly Boot (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) tied for 45th with rounds of 86 and 79 (165, +21), and freshman Leigh Crosby (Athens, Ga./Oconee) is one shot behind in a tie for 49th.
