- Attended Key West High School, competing at the 3A District 16 level
- Earned a three-star rating with a .8567 247 Sports composite clip, ranking as the No. 183 recruit in the state of Florida
- Was a four-year starter, including starting three years on both sides of the football
- On defense, Mercer holds the record for most sacks in a single season with 14 during his 2025 senior season; he led the team with 52 tackles on the campaign
- Additionally, he set the Key West High School record for most sacks in a single game with 4.5 against Lehigh on Homecoming on Nov. 17, 2025
- On offense, he blocked for two 1,000+ yard rushers in consecutive seasons
- Helped his team make an appearance in the 3A FHSAA regional semifinals with a win over Cypress Lake in the quarterfinals, finishing the 2025 season with a 7-5 record
- Also competed in track and field for Key West; in 2025 he earned a district championship in discus and a bronze medal in shot put, qualifying him for regionals in both events before eventually finishing fourth in the discus at the state level, a Key West school record in the event
