He made the short trip east to Orlando after two seasons as the defensive coordinator at South Florida. While with the Bulls, Bresnahan's defense forced at least 20 turnovers each season. It was ranked 12th in the FBS in tackles for loss per game and 21st in total defense in 2012. That was highlighted by a 26th ranking in pass defense and 28th showing in rushing defense.
The 2013-14 campaigns were Bresnahan's first in the college game since 1992-93. In 2012, he was the defensive coordinator for the UFL's Sacramento Mountain Lions after a year in the same role with the Oakland Raiders. Bresnahan mentored the Florida Tuskers' linebackers in 2009 and was their defensive coordinator in 2010, with both seasons witnessing the Tuskers reach the UFL Championship Game.
Bresnahan coordinated the defense for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2005-07, and was a defensive assistant in Cincinnati in 2004. The Bengals captured the AFC North title in 2005.
His first stint with the Raiders began in 1998 as their defensive backs coach. Bresnahan eventually jumped into the defensive coordinator role for 2000-03. The 2000 version of the Raiders delivered an AFC West crown and advanced to the AFC Championship Game. One year later, he earned another division title and defeated the New York Jets in the Wild Card round. Oakland went back-to-back-to-back in 2002 and climbed its way to Super Bowl XXXVII against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Bresnahan's first experiences in the NFL came as the Cleveland Browns' linebackers and quality control coach from 1994-95 and the Indianapolis Colts' linebackers coach from 1996-97. His first defensive coordinator position was achieved with Maine during the 1992-93 seasons.
Bresnahan worked alongside UCF head coach George O'Leary at Georgia Tech, with Bresnahan spending time with the tight ends in 1988 and then the inside linebackers from 1989-91. Meanwhile, O'Leary was the Yellow Jackets' defensive coordinator from 1987-91. The duo helped Tech claim a share of the national championship in 1990.
Bresnahan started his career as a graduate assistant at Navy in 1983 where he was a three-year letterman. He went on to serve as a commissioned officer from 1984-86 before returning to coaching.
Bresnahan's father, Tom, spent 16 seasons in the NFL coaching ranks, working with the Chiefs, Giants, Cardinals and Bills. At each stop he was the offensive line coach, and also earned the role of offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 1992-96. He was a part of the Bills' famous run of four-straight Super Bowls from 1990-93.
A native of Annapolis, Md., Bresnahan and his wife, Erin, have four daughters: Megan, Caitlin, Caroline and Danielle.
