Al Seamonson joined the UCF coaching staff in January 2011 as the program[apos]s linebackers coach. He arrived in Orlando after 10 years as an assistant at Maryland.
In his final year with the Terrapins, Seamonson helped Maryland go 9-4 in 2010 and conclude the campaign with a No. 23 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and a big win over East Carolina in the Military Bowl. Seamonson spent his first eight years in College Park working with the Terrapin outside linebackers before taking over as the coach for all linebackers in 2009. He served as a special teams assistant throughout his time under Ralph Friedgen and was also the Terps[apos] defensive coordinator for the end of the 2008 season.
Seamonson[apos]s time at Maryland was one of the program[apos]s best periods ever, helping the school to seven bowls in 10 years along with the 2001 ACC championship. Amongst his prized pupils was three-time NFL All-Pro Shawne Merriman. Merriman garnered All-ACC First Team honors in 2004 and was selected with the 12th overall pick by San Diego in the 2005 NFL Draft. After his first campaign with the Chargers, he was tabbed the league[apos]s defensive rookie of the year.
Seamonson has 28 years of collegiate coaching experience. He spent the 2000 campaign as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Bowling Green. Prior to joining the staff at Bowling Green, he worked at The Citadel from 1987-99, starting as the wide receivers coach for one year before spending the remainder of his tenure as the program[apos]s special teams coordinator and linebackers coach.
At The Citadel, Seamonson worked for current UCF offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe. He helped coach five linebackers to All-Southern Conference recognition. In 1992, the Bulldogs led the country in scoring defense, allowing just 13.0 points per game en route to a conference championship.
From 1985-86, Seamonson served as the linebackers coach at Army. The Cadets enjoyed great success during his tenure, and recorded a win over Illinois in the 1985 Peach Bowl.
A 1982 graduate of Wisconsin, Seamonson was a two-year letterwinner at wide receiver. In 1982, he began his coaching career as a volunteer coach for the Badgers[apos] wide receivers. The next two years, he was a graduate assistant working with the Wisconsin secondary.
Seamonson and his wife, Kristi, have three children: Kylen, Kalvin and Karter.
