Armour and English Lead Volleyball in Dominating Sweep Over Norfolk State

by Alex Clough

ORLANDO - On the backs of a historic night for the UCF volleyball program on Friday, with head coach Matt Botsford tallying his first win as Knights head coach, the Black and Gold followed up the occasion with a sweep over Norfolk State in dominating fashion at The Venue.

UCF’s attack was firing on all cylinders, with Avah Armour and Skylar English leading the charge with double-digit kills. The freshmen played yet another large role, aiding in every aspect of the win.

The speed of the offense was much better today, I really liked the balls that both Abby and Mikayla were getting to our left sides in transition. As we continue to evolve our offense, we'll continue to grow in those moments of the game.

QUICK HITS

  • Abby Schomers moved into eighth all-time in career assists after adding 31 this afternoon. With 2,099 to her name, the redshirt-junior jumped former Knights Erin Olson (2,074) and Miranda Watkins (2,082).
  • Armour notched 13 kills, marking the 30th match in her career with 10 or more to her name. With 27 across the first two contests, the Colorado native is hitting an impressive .317.
  • Making her UCF debut, English was dominant throughout the win. Her team-leading 15 kills and 12 digs, which match her career high, was paired with two aces.
  • The Knights’ 2-0 start marks the fourth consecutive season they’ve won each of their first two contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Armour set the tone early with five of the squad’s first 10 points. In all, six Knights notched kills as the Black and Gold pulled away with a 25-15 first-set advantage.

Norfolk State opened the second set with more intensity, keeping the early stages level until English fired off a pair of kills, followed by Armour replicating the sequence with two of her own.

Sasha Cohen came alive down the stretch, as she and Shomers found chemistry together with a few eye-catching points. UCF pulled away from the opposition to double its lead, taking the set, 25-19.

Not too much surprise, Armour and English took over in the third with six kills each, keeping the Knights in the lead as Norfolk State continued to put pressure on the hosts.

At 17-14, freshman Reese Moore’s serving caused issues for the Spartans, propelling the Knights into a 20-14 advantage. Orlando native Fallon Stewart put the finishing touches on another exceptional performance with multiple marquee kills, including the match-winner.
