Season Preview: Track and Field Primed for Exciting 2025 Campaign

by Alex Clough

ORLANDO, Fla. - With a foundational 2024 performance from the program in its first Big 12 season, head coach Dana Boone and the UCF track and field squad return to action this weekend in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Knights' acclimation into one of the nation’s premier conferences saw multiple highlights, including now-former Knight Rayniah Jones’ third-overall finish in the 100m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last summer. While the ‘hurdles queen’ put an exclamation on her UCF career in her final race, her two fellow national qualifiers, Asherah Collins and Kiah Williams, return to lead a talented roster in 2025.

With more established athletes in the aforementioned graduates and consistent contributors such as I’Asia Wilson, Natalia Madison and Adaobi Tabugbo, a few new faces will provide the squad with a fresh look ahead of its sophomore slate.

SPRINTS/HURDLES

A constant strength for the Knights during the Boone era, there is plenty to be excited about throughout the sprints and hurdles groups. Kiah Williams, who tallied her second-career All-America honor in the 400m at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships last year, will look to conclude her UCF career with a bid to indoor nationals in March. With potential to score in both the 200m and 400m at the conference championships, she will serve as a leader both on and off the track for the Black and Gold.

Senior I’Asia Wilson made a promising jump during her junior year, advancing once again to the NCAA east prelims and playing an integral role in the Knights’ 4x100m relay squad. She is joined by returning juniors Paige Archer and Coco Branch, who continue to drop times in both the 100m and 200m. Janiah Pulliam and Briana Rodriguez will each enter their second year in Orlando, with both having a respectable freshman season to build upon.

Adaobi Tabugbo enters her final collegiate season with plenty of goals as the former BYU standout placed third in the 60m hurdles at the 2024 Big 12 indoor championships before running unattached during the outdoor campaign to provide a full 2025 slate. She’s joined by sophomore Y’Vette Harris as the tandem will lead the hurdles group. The California native had a remarkable freshman season which saw her advance to the NCAA east prelims in the 100m hurdles, while also securing a finals appearance in the same event at the USA U-20 Championships.

A standout transfer class boasts multiple athletes with both Big 12 and Power 4 experience, along with standout names from multiple levels of the collegiate landscape. Kylah Buckle (Tennessee), Twaneise Johnson (Kansas State), and Deja Shaw-Huckaby (North Texas/Oklahoma) each add experienced resumes with the potential to be key performers during the conference championships.

Khristel Martindale (Lewis College), Jasmine Jolly (SMU) and Jazmen Newberry (UAlbany) will also bring depth to the squads, with the latter possessing multiple American East titles.  Aaliyah Gipson, one of the highest rated recruits to embark on UCF, will be joined by Maryland native McKenzie Suggs to start their journeys in Orlando.

JUMPS/MULTIS

One of the nation's most highly rated up-and-coming coaches, Broady Honeycutt, takes the reins of the jumps and multis squad ahead of the 2025 season. He will have an experienced group to mentor as Asherah Collins and Natalia Madison have been a foundation for the Knights over the years and return with high expectations.

Collins continues to make history in Orlando, etching her name in the record books as one of the most prolific jumpers to grace the UCF track and field complex. In 2024, she became the first Knight to qualify for outdoor nationals in both the long and triple jump, where she would tally a pair of second-team All-America honors. At UCF’s inaugural outing in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship, Collins scored across both meets in the triple jump, along with an impressive performance in the long jump in Lubbock, Texas.

With long-time teammate Holly Cassels graduating, Madison will become the sole focus for multis, as the senior has continued to raise her marks in both the pentathlon and heptathlon since her arrival in 2020.

The jumps squad is rounded out by a talented trio, headlined by Louisiana Monroe transfer Angelina Horn, who follows Honeycutt to bolster the group. Sophomore Alexis Waller will look to build on a promising freshman campaign, while Hayley Manners will make her debut for the Knights after suffering a season-ending injury before the 2024 season. Manners and Horn were teammates at Central Michigan in 2022-23.

DISTANCE

An encouraging cross country campaign from second-year assistant coach Bryan Harmon and his squad leaves a lot to look forward to for the distance group in 2025. Eight returners are joined by eight newcomers, including a talented group of freshmen who solidified themselves in the fall.

Embarking on their third collegiate season, the likes of Andrea Ballestero, Kendall Hughes, Paige and Riley Jaszczak, Isabella Richardson, and Penelope Sosa, will lead the youthful squad with plenty of experience. Hughes authored a breakout cross country campaign, while the Jaszczak twins continued to grow in their roles. Richardson and Sosa have long been standouts for the group, especially on the track. Ballestero will look to make strides on the track after consistent performances in 2023 and 2024.

Sophomore Abby Clements and Karin Dobiasch were brilliant across their first season with the Knights, as the former has already shown her growth with a strong season on the course in 2024, leading the team at multiple meets. A native of Bayern, Germany, Dobiasch will serve as a premier short-distance feature after great performances in the 800m a season ago.

Six freshmen will add depth to the lineup, with Gianna Del Pizzo, Raquel Edwards, Avery Latto, Madison Patchan, Ava Quattrocchi and Lucy Voss, primed to make an impact this season. Quattrocchi and Del Pizzo each gave valiant efforts at the Big 12 Championship and NCAA South Regional during the cross-country campaign.

An exciting addition from Norfolk State, Yvone Sandui placed among the top three in the mile, 3000m and 8000m at the MEAC Indoor Championship in 2024. Virginia native Bailey McLain will also join the squad, making her first appearance at the collegiate level.
