UCF Wins The American Outdoor Championship

WICHITA, Kansas – The UCF track and field team completed its sweep of the American Athletic Conference 2022 championships in record-setting fashion on Sunday as the Knights won the outdoor title in Cessna Stadium.
 
UCF scored a league-record 163 points on its way to the first outdoor title as members of The American. The Knights won the indoor and outdoor titles for the first time since 2013.
 

 
The UCF coaching staff of Dana Boone, Bryan Jackson and Glenn Smith named The American Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time in 2022.
 



Entering Sunday, UCF was in seventh place in the team standings. Slowly and steady, the Knights began their climb up the leaderboard. After the first five events, UCF sat in fourth. After the 100-meter hurdles final, the Knights were in the lead. Once in front, the Black and Gold never looked back.
 
The Knights captured five event titles on Sunday, and six total over the three-day championship.
 
UCF's 4x1 relay collected the first event title of the day. The squad of Ani Wells, Ciara Holback, Beyonce Defreitas and I'Asia Wilson edged South Florida down the stretch to win in 44.41.
 
Rayniah Jones ran a stadium record 12.93 to defend her 100-meter hurdles title.
 
The 2022 AAC champion in the indoor 400-meter dash, Latasha Smith added the outdoor crown to her resume as she won in 53.05.
 
Selena Wright gave UCF a sweep of the hurdles as she won the 400-meter hurdles in 58.47.
 
With the team title already in hand, UCF lined up to close out the weekend with the 4x4 relay. The Knights entered the meet with the top mark in the conference. Kiah Williams had the Knights in front after the first leg. Latasha Smith extended UCF's advantage before passing the baton to Kai'lyn Kirkland. Kirkland handed off the lead to Samieryah Bradwell, who held off a late push from Houston to close out the championship with the 4x4 title.
 
Charlotte Crook picked up all-conference honors and a spot on the podium as she ran 4:25.38 to finish third in the 1500-meter. Kiah Williams joined Smith on the podium in the 400-meter dash as she placed second in 53.20. Smith made a second trip to the podium, collecting the bronze medal with a personal best 23.08 in the 200-meter dash. Jones also added to her medal collected with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash. Kaliah Jones took her spot on the podium with a third place showing in the high jump.
