GAINESVILLE –
Despite rainy conditions that led to a delay, the UCF track and field team opened the Tom Jones Memorial with a strong showing on Friday on the Percy Beard Track in James G. Pressly Stadium.

A dominant freshman campaign continued for Valerie Lastra as the rookie collected her fourth freshman record of the year. The Miami native posted a 4:26.75 in the 1500-meter run to finish 16th overall. Her mark is third on UCF's all-time performers list.

Teammate Charlotte Crook posted a personal best 4:25.00 to finish 12th in the 1500-meter run. While Lastra broke Crook's freshman record in the event, the Preston, England, native moved up to second on the all-time performers list with her improved time.

Danielle Bess used a personal best mark of 24.08 to pick up a top 20 finish in the 200-meter dash. The freshman finished 16th overall and posted the seventh-best mark in the event on the American Athletic Conference performance list.

Victoria Jung earned UCF's first top 10 finish of the day, using a personal best 10:54.14 to earn sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Her mark puts her third on UCF's all-time performers list.

UCF continues action at the Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday. The Knights open track action at noon with the 100-meter hurdles and begin field action at 1 p.m. in the triple jump.
