JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (UCFKnights.com) – The No. 31 UCF men's tennis team defeated ETSU, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
"We played in really tough conditions today," head coach John Roddick said. "It was very windy and cold. Our guys did a nice job of competing to get the job done."
The Knights (13-5) dropped the doubles point, even with redshirt senior Harrison Richmond and senior Mariano Porter posting a 5-2 (retirement) victory at the No. 1 spot.
In singles, the Black and Gold automatically tied it up when the Bucs defaulted at the No. 6 position. Sophomore Kalman Boyd added a second point to the overall score with a 7-5, 6-1 win on the fifth court. Porter added UCF's third point with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
ETSU started to fight back taking wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions. It was down to Richmond on court two. After dropping the first set 6-3, the Pawleys Island, S.C., native came back to post a 6-2 second set win and a clinched the match, 6-4, in the third.
The Knights will take on UNCW in Johnson City, Tenn., tomorrow at 2 p.m., at ETSU.
