The UCF men's tennis team picked up seven wins in the first competition of Director of Tennis John Roddick at Day One of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
Reece Acre, Chris Barrus and Saitejas Mopuri all garnered a pair of wins on Friday advancing to the Round of 16 in each of their Divisions.
Barrus grabbed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory in the Round of 64 against Lander's Jules Vauthier before defeating South Carolina's Scotty Cameron 6-4, 6-1 to reach the Sweet Sixteen.
Mopuri defeated Michael Perry from Gardner-Webb 6-3, 6-4 before battling Vikram Chari of Vanderbilt 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 to advance to Saturday's Round of 16 in Division III. Acree also advance to the Sweet Sixteen in the same division with a win over Anthony Brennan of Garnder-Webb. The senior then trumped Lorenzo Camilli 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the Sweet Sixteen.
Arjune Watane won his first match against Abhin Sharma from Georgia State 6-4, 6-2 before falling to Alex Garcia of Charlotte.
Competition at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships begins tomorrow morning with the Round of 16 in singles action. A handful of Knights will begin play in doubles as well.
