HOUSTON (UCFAthletics.com) - The No. 23 UCF women's soccer team started its weekend road swing in fine fashion Friday as the Knights posted a 1-0 Conference USA victory over Rice at Rice Soccer Stadium. Junior Tishia Jewell (Satellite Beach, Fla.) tallied the lone goal of the match at the 70-minute mark.
The Knights improved to 9-2-4 overall and 4-1-2 in C-USA play with the victory. UCF has not lost in six-straight contests.
Jewell scored the gamewinner off a feed from junior Andrea Rodrigues (St. Petersburg, Fla.). The forward got past Rice goalkeeper Amy Cyz, tapping the ball into the empty net for her sixth goal of the year.
"This was one of our more complete games," UCF head coach Amanda Cromwell said. "We played extremely well in the first half. We created a lot of good chances, but just couldn't finish. Rice is a good team and we knew that this would be a battle. Andrea found Tishia for a great goal, and we held strong at the end."
The Owls fell to 8-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the league with the loss.
UCF finished with a 15-11 shot advantage.
UCF senior Aline Reis (Campinas, Brazil) recorded three saves in the winning effort. The Knights got contributions from seven substitutes during the match, and each member of the group played at least 10 minutes.
"Our subs played really important minutes," Cromwell said. "Getting the shutout on the road was great. Aline played well, and was able to knock away some corner kicks.
The contest was the first of two in Houston this weekend for the Knights. UCF will face host Houston Sunday afternoon.
