End of Summer UCF Baseball Update

Sept. 15, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - With the minor league circuit winding down and collegiate summer ball in the past, UCFAthletics.com is here to provide fans with final statistics of current and former Knights who played during the summer. Among those alumni include five players from last year's UCF squad.

Taking the Orem Owlz (rookie league) deep into the playoffs, Dwayne Bailey and Tyson Auer helped lead the Owlz to the Pioneer League Championship finals only to suffer a setback to the Great Falls Voyagers. But they both served as consistent starters and each hit at least .286 on the year.

UCF's 2008 catcher, Robert Lara, tore up the Arizona League, batting .344 with 34 RBI and a .974 on-base plus slugging percentage for the Padres organization. On the mound, Mitch Herold guided the Class A Lowell Spinners to their third-best record in team history by going 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA and 26 punchouts in 28.0 innings. Fellow lefty Mitch Houck started his professional career with the rookie level Gulf Coast League Mets but worked up to Class A and recorded a 2.25 ERA in two games for the Savannah Sand Gnats.

Meanwhile, current UCF Knight Shane Brown was listed as the fourth-top prospect in the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League according to Baseball America. The infielder amassed a .366 batting average while driving in 31 and pounding out six dingers for the Beltway Blue Caps. Chris Duffy joined him with the Blue Caps and while adjusting to a new position in the outfield, he drove in 30 and had eight stolen bases and .290 average.
