ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The 2008 summer continues to move along, and one current and one former UCF baseball player have both experienced a memorable July. After playing four years for the Knights, Tyson Auer made his professional debut with the Orem Owlz, while current hurler Austin Hudson pitched his way onto the prestigious Cape Cod League All-Star Team.
Auer signed a free-agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and reported to the rookie level with the Owlz. Reunited with UCF second baseman Dwayne Bailey, Auer saw his first action at the plate with the Owlz at the Ogden Raptors July 28 and proceeded to go 2-for-5.
Bailey has already competed in 18 games and posted a .270 average, helping Orem claim a spot in the playoffs by having the best record in the first half of the season. His best outing of the season came on the same night Auer stepped onto the field for the first time, as Bailey crushed a homer vs. Ogden in a 2-for-3 affair with two walks.
Another member of the 2008 Knights, Robert Lara is still lighting it up for the Arizona League Padres, going .375 at the dish with a pair of homers and a .998 on-base plus slugging percentage. And on the hill, Mitch Herold owns a 1.50 ERA and a 2-0 record for the Class A Lowell Spinners (Boston).
Hudson will be returning to UCF for his junior season in 2009, and is making great progress in the Cape Cod League this summer, one of the top collegiate wood-bat leagues in the country. Playing for the Hyannis Mets, the righty is 1-2 with a 1.50 ERA and 25 strikeouts in seven starts.
