Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team stands in third place and is only one stroke off the lead following the opening round of the Conference USA Championship in Birmingham, Ala. Junior Annabel Silk (West Meon, England/Millfield) was the top Knight golfer on Monday, posting a 74 (+2) at the Limestone Springs Golf Club (Par 72 - 6,161 yards).

"We hung in there today despite not playing our best," UCF head coach Emilee Klein said. "The course played very difficult with the wind and some tough hole conditions, but fortunately we are only a shot behind the leaders."

Silk, who is fourth overall, is joined in the top 10 by UCF freshman Sara Hurwitch (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion), who opened the tournament with a 77 (+5) and is tied for seventh. She led the Knights with three birdies in her opening 18 holes.

"Annabel played awesome and this golf course really fits her game," Klein added. "She is a veteran presence for our younger girls and really showed that today with how well she played."

Gerina Mendoza led UTEP to the top of the team standings and holds the individual lead after carding a 68 (-4). The Miners posted a 308 (+20) and share the top spot with SMU (308, +20). Those two schools hold a one-shot lead on the Knights (309, +21). First through sixth in the nine-team field is only separated by seven strokes.

UCF freshman Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium/Bradenton Academy) is also just outside the Top 10, after posting a 78 (+6). Tomko is tied for 14th and birdied No. 16 to help the Knights close their opening round within a stroke of the Miners and Mustangs.

Sophomores Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md./The Pendleton School) and Mayule Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway) each fired an 80 in their respective opening rounds and the duo is among a group of nine golfers tied for 17th.

The Knights tied for third at the league championship a year ago, which was their first as members of C-USA.
