Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team is tied for fifth following round one of the Ryder/Florida Women's Collegiate Golf Championship in Miami Lakes, Fla. Freshman Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium/Bradenton Academy) posted the low round of the day for the Knights on the Par 72, 6,210-yard layout at Don Shula's Golf Club and Resort.
Tomko is tied for fourth with six other golfers after carding a 75 (+3), which was her second best round of the season. Classmate Sara Hurwitch (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) is only one shot back and in a tie for 11th after finishing the opening 18 holes with a 76 (+4).
Only two strokes separate fifth from second in the 12-team field, but Florida Southern built a nine-stroke lead after the Lady Moccasins posted a team score of 298 (+10). UCF compiled a team score of 309 (+21) on the opening day and shares fifth Florida International.
Sophomores Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md./The Pendleton School) and Mayule Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway) both shot 79's (+7) for the Knights and are tied for 28th. Freshman Leight Crosby (Athens, Ga./Oconee) is tied for 36th after posting a score of 81 (+9).
Round two of the three-day tournament is on Saturday.
