Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF rowing team enters the 2007 season with high hopes following a 2006 season which saw the Golden Knights earn victories at several regattas, such as the Petrakis Cup, UCF also claimed a spot on the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association national poll for the first time in school history with a No. 20 ranking.
The 2006 season also was a time to shine for several rowers on the Golden Knights squad, as returning senior Krystina Sarff and junior Caitlin Pauls both earned All-South honors, with Sarff earning first-team recognition and Pauls second-team recognition.
Not only did the Knights perform on the water but also off the water. Six rowers from UCF were named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes, the most selections in the nation from one school. Former Knights Heather Brooks and Laura Brad earned the honor in their final year with the Golden Knights, Sarff and Pauls along with, juniors Laura Bacci, and Erin Riegel, were also praised for their achievements in the classroom by the CRCA who announced the award winners in May of 2006.
This year marks the fourth season for head coach Leeanne Crain. Kim Cupini and Becky Frost both return as assistant coaches for the varsity squad, and assistant Corrie McGrath also returns, moving from the lightweight squad to coaching the novice squad. UCF welcomes new assistant coach Andrew Derrick to the Golden Knights, Derrick comes to Orlando from the University of Washington, and looks for success as he leads the lightweight squad into the 2007 season.
This weekend marks the start of the Golden Knights 2007 spring campaign. The Golden Knights varsity openweight squad will travel to Tampa, Fla., to race Michigan in a scrimmage on Saturday, while the lightweight squad will travel just a few miles to Winter Park to face local rival Rollins College in the Metro Cup, also scheduled for Saturday.
The next regattas for UCF rowing will be two weeks from Saturday as the Golden Knights again do double duty, with the openweight squad traveling to Austin, Texas, for the Longhorn Invitational, March 16 - 18, and the lightweight squad traveling back to Winter Park for the Rollins Tri-Meet on March 17.
