Kristy McLaughlin shot the low round of the day for UCF Tuesday with a 7-over-par 79 in extremely windy conditions at the Waterlefe Golf and River Club, but it was not enough for the Golden Knights to maintain their lead at the Waterlefe Invitational. UCF held a two-stroke lead over Florida International heading into the final round, but slipped to second after recording a 35-over-par 323. FIU finished three shots ahead of UCF in the 14-team field after posting a 30-over-par 318.
"I'm really proud of the way the team played in this event," UCF coach Emilee Klein said. "They played their best, but it wasn't quite enough today. It was a learning experience for us since it was our first time playing with a lead. Overall, our play in this tournament should help us move up in the rankings and should give us a lot of confidence heading into the state championship next week."
FIU's Rebecca Samuelsson began the day two shots out of the lead and claimed medalist honors after carding a 4-over-par 76. Louisville's Adrienne White surrendered the lead as a result of her 79 and finished one stroke behind Samuelsson.
Host South Florida and Louisville tied for third, while Miami shot the lowest round of the day with a 28-over-par 316 and moved from fifth to fourth.
UCF's Ashley Grier closed with a 9-over-par 81 and finished third in the team standings at 16-over-par. Holly Boot posted a final-round 10-over-par 82 and was UCF's next-highest finisher, tying for seventh at 19-over-par. Grier began the day in third place, while Boot started the day in fifth.
McLaughlin was able to move up in the team standings as a result of her sub-80 performance, one of very few recorded Tuesday. The junior college transfer recorded her second top-10 finish at UCF, tying for ninth,.
Jessica Trein, playing in her first event of the spring because of injury, carded her third consecutive 81 and tied for 25th. Lauren Motyl tied for 40th in the individual standings.
