Focused on the Home Opener
Saturday's game in Columbus, Ohio was the largest crowd the Knights will play in front of this season. Despite the 31-16 loss to the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes, the Knights plan to learn from their experience at one of the largest venues in college football.
"(We need to) correct our mistakes," senior fullback Billy Giovanetti said. "You can't really linger on this loss. You have to move on."
Playing in Saturday's loud environment helped the Knights communicate better. The team had to call the majority of its plays from signals and other forms of non-verbal communication.
Giovanetti said he knows the team will improve its communication. He also said the Knights will work on cutting down their turnovers. The Knights lost the ball three times on offense vs. the Buckeyes. Now, UCF turns its focus to the FIU Panthers and the first home game of the season.
"We have to keep our head up," senior safety Kemal Ishmael said. "They're a good team and we came into their home and tried to play a good football game. But we learned a lot about our team. We just have to keep pushing forward.
"Every team we play is going to be difficult," continued Ishmael. "Playing Ohio State was a good opportunity for us. Overall, we're moving on to next weekend."
Running backs Storm Johnson and Brynn Harvey combined for 111 yards rushing in the contest, against a solid defensive front for Ohio State.
"Brynn and Storm really stepped up," Giovanetti said. "Both came into the game and proved they could be a very good run threat for us. That's a big part of our offense."
Other standout performers included receiver J.J. Worton and linebacker Terrance Plummer. Worton hauled in seven receptions for 96 yards, while Plummer registered a career-best 15 tackles.
