ORLANDO – After playing four games away from home last week, the UCF baseball team will return to John Euliano Park to open a 12-game homestand against a familiar foe when it hosts South Florida for a three-game series beginning Friday.
The weekend series will run Friday to Sunday at John Euliano Park. Friday’s series opener is set for 6 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday are both scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. All three games will air live on ESPN+ as well as on the radio on FM 96.9 The Game and the iHeartRadio app. Live stats will also be available by visiting UCF.Statbroadcast.com.
The Knights will enter the series with a 4-3 record on the year after going 1-2 at the Live Like Lou Jax Baseball Classic at VyStar Ballpark in Jacksonville last weekend. UCF was then scheduled to play at Jacksonville University on Tuesday, but the game was postponed due to a facility issue with JU’s stadium lighting system at John Sessions Stadium. The game will look to made up at a later date during the season.
At the Jax Classic, the Black and Gold rallied late to defeat Notre Dame, 4-2, in 10 innings in the opener on Friday before falling to Indiana, 6-1, on Saturday, and 11-0 to the defending national champion and top-ranked LSU Tigers on Sunday.
In last Friday’s game against the Fighting Irish, the contest was deadlocked in a pitcher’s duel in the early stages between UCF starter Braden Smith and Notre Dame starter Jack Radel. The Irish then picked up a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. With Notre Dame having gone to the bullpen after six hitless innings from the Preseason All-American Radel, UCF then picked up a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Javier Crespo.
With two outs and a runner on second base in the ninth, Andrew Williamson delivered a clutch RBI triple off the wall in center field to tie the score. The Knights then didn’t waste any time in extra innings, as James Hankerson Jr. gave UCF the lead with a big two-run pinch-hit single in the top of the 10th to put the Knights on top. Black and Gold reliever Evan Jones closed things out in the bottom of the 10th by striking out the Irish in order to seal the victory for UCF.
Both Jones and Kevin Schoneboom were dominant in relief for the Black and Gold in the game. Schoneboom allowed just one hit while striking out three over 2.0 shutout innings and Jones followed that up with 2.1 hitless and scoreless innings of relief while striking out five to earn the win. Offensively, Hankerson Jr. led the way with two runs batted in while Williamson and Crespo each had one.
For the weekend, Crespo led UCF at the plate by hitting an even .500 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. The senior third baseman earned Live Like Lou Jax Classic All-Tournament Team honors for his efforts. Williamson was next by tallying a pair of hits with a triple, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Smith led the starting rotation by allowing just two runs and striking out four over 5.2 innings to post a 3.18 ERA. Jones, Schoneboom, Chandler Dorsey and Anthony Lariz all tossed scoreless outings of relief over the tournament.
