Women’s Soccer Opens Trip with 0-0 Draw at Cincinnati

by James Warnick

CINCINNATI – UCF women’s soccer recorded a 0-0 draw in Big 12 action at Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. With the result, the Knights are now unbeaten in their last four games.

The Black and Gold moved to 8-2-3 overall and a tie for sixth place in the conference standings with 2-1-3 in league mark following the contest. UC now holds a 3-5-6 season record and a 1-3-2 conference clip.

“I’m proud of the way our team played today. We created a lot of great chances and competed with confidence but credit to Cincinnati—their defense was very strong,” UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. “Of course we would’ve loved to come home with a win, but there’s a lot to build on from the way we performed as a team.”

The Knights had a strong opening half in which they got off six shots but couldn’t find the back of the net as the game remained scoreless at the break. Rajanah Reed and Liz Worden led the way with a pair of shots apiece in the opening half.

The reigning Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week Genesis Perez Watson too had a strong opening 45 minutes of play by stopping a trio of shots to keep the game scoreless at the break.

The Black and Gold offense continued to look to get on the scoreboard in the second half by taking six more shots, but was ultimately held scoreless as Cincinnati’s Camryn Miller made a number of key saves.

Gabi Berchon had an opportunity for UCF in the 52nd minute but her attempt was saved and Hannah Boughton followed with another from the right side in the 65th minute but her shot was too deflected. Reed followed with a shot on goal in the 80th minute and Worden had one in the 89th minute, but they were both saved as the game finished in a tie.

Defensively, Perez Watson and the UCF defense had a solid game by limiting the Bearcats to just eight shots on the day. Perez Watson stopped all four shots on frame by UC to record her sixth clean sheet of the season.

Worden led the Knights offensively with four shots and two of those coming on frame, while Reed followed with a trio of total shots. Coley Sodolski paced Cincinnati with three shots.

The contest marked the first of three consecutive road matches for the Black and Gold.

The Knights will continue the road stretch with two more matches away from home next week. UCF will first travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to face Oklahoma State on Thursday before capping the trip with a Sunday matinee at Houston.
