Volleyball Sweeps Stetson, Opens 305 Challenge in Style

by Alex Clough

MIAMI - In a truly dominating display, UCF volleyball put its foot on the gas and disposed of Stetson in straight sets (25-9, 25-15, 25-11), claiming its first of three contests this weekend in just over an hour.

Consistent pressure from the service line proved to be too much for the Hatters (1-3), emphasizing an overall offensive onslaught from the Knights (4-0). Avah Armour’s 17 kills highlighted eight Knights who tallied at least two of their own.

I was really happy with the service pressure we were able to apply right from the start, it helped us defensively and to play a clean, efficient game. From that standpoint, the decision making was good and exactly what we needed to start the weekend off.

QUICK HITS

  • Botsford becomes the second head coach in program history to win his first four matches, and the first to pile up a point margin total of 97, having outscored opponents 312-215.
  • Avah Armour set a three-set match career-high with 17 kills, boasting seven in both sets one and three.
  • The set-one margin (16) and overall win margin (40) both marked the highest since Sept. 1, 2024, at Charlotte when the Knights won the opening set by 17 before taking the contest by 44 points.
  • UCF improves to an eye-catching 67-6 record against Stetson, the most wins against any school in program history.
  • The Knights tallied eight service aces, with four coming from freshman Sarah Mendona, setting a career-high for the rookie and the most by a Knight this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Early serving from English set the tone for what would be a dominating first set from the Knights. Jumping out to a 5-0 lead, UCF maintained the pressure as Armour was aggressive, as a trio of kills forced a Stetson timeout at 11-3, Knights.

The Preseason All-Big 12 honoree continued to take the charge to the Hatters, with Ella Chapman and English each supplying three kills of their own to secure a brilliant 25-9 set-one triumph.

With the advantage, Botsford utilized UCF’s depth, with Mikayla Porter, Mendoza and Nygeria Hart each attributing to another composed performance in the second. By the time Hart had secured her first collegiate kill, the Knights had built up a 19-6 lead.

A Fallon Stewart kill eventually put the set firmly in the Knights' corner to double their advantage, 25-15.

The third, and what would be the final set, was more of the same from the Black and Gold. Armour was attacking early and often to force a Hatter timeout at 13-4. UCF forced 11 errors from Stetson and a minimal .056 hitting percentage, with a pair of them coming late on to secure a 25-11 win.

UP NEXT

An anticipated contest with Miami awaits the Knights, with first serve set for 6 p.m. tomorrow night from the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
