DELAND, Fla. – UCF volleyball earned a sweep against UNCW Saturday evening in the Edmunds Center at Stetson.
The Knights (4-0) recorded 46 kills on the day while the Seahawks (2-3) were kept to a .146 clip. Avah Armour tallied a match-high 14 kills with an attacking percentage of .370. Abby Schomers ran the offense with 39 assists.
Armour led the Knights off in set one with an ace and a Seahawks miscue to take an early 2-0 lead. UCF and UNCW continued to trade points until an 11-11 deadlock when the Knights went on a quick 6-0 scoring frenzy with three kills from Britt Carlson, 16-11. The Black and Gold held onto the lead as Chloe Scheer served up an ace for a 25-20 set win.
UCF seemed to come out a bit flat in the second set as UNCW quickly got up to a 15-9 lead which forced a UCF timeout. Alexia Kuehl snapped the Seahawks' run with a kill followed by two UNCW attacking errors to get within three points of the lead. Back-to-back kills from Heidi Bonde rallied the Knights into a 5-0 run to capture the lead, 20-19. UNCW quickly tied it up, 20-20. UCF went on a 3-0 run as Sasha Cohen put the set away with an ace, 25-21.
A big solo block from Kuehl followed by an ace from Cohen gave the Knights an early 3-1 lead in the third set. UNCW knotted it up 4-4 and took the lead following a 3-0 run. They chipped away at the Seahawks’ lead with a kill from Cohen and Sophia Kotsovolos served up her first ace while donning the Black and Gold, 11-10. UCF took the lead for good at 15-14 even though UNCW went on a 4-0 rally, 24-22, the Knights wrapped the match up 25-22.
Armour, Schomers and Scheer each were tabbed to the All-Tournament Team.
The Knights travel to Tallahassee next weekend for the Seminole Classic against Florida Atlantic (Sept. 14) and Florida State (Sept. 15).
