ORLANDO – The UCF track and field team opened the Knights Invite with a school record and two event titles on Friday at the UCF Track Complex.
Adrienne Adams started the meet off with a record performance in the discus. Her third attempt of the day landed at 17601/53.69m, which was not only a personal best, but also set the UCF record in the event. Adams broke LaKendra Thames' record 174-4/53.14m set int 2010. Her mark also gave her the event title and moved her up to eighth on the NCAA's outdoor performance list.
The Knights also captured the 200-meter dash title as Beyonce Defreitas held off a late rally in her heat to take gold in 23.61. Latasha Smith ran a personal best 23.63 in her outdoor season debut to finish third. In all, six Knights finished in the top 10 and seven finished in the top 12 o the event.
Natalia Madison cleared a personal best 5-7.75/1.72m to finish second in her first collegiate outdoor high jump. Kaliah Jones added a podium finish, taking third with a height of 5-5.75/1.67m. Brittany Floyd cleared a personal best 5-5.75/1.67m to finish eighth.
Selena Wright finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.10. Kennedie Reese set a personal best in the long jump, landing at 17-5.5/5.32m. Brenna Mullaney improved her 1500-meter run mark by more than 16-seconds, running 4:49.16 in the event. Holly Cassels set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 35-8.34/10.89m.
UCF returns to action on Saturday, beginning with the hammer throw at 10 a.m. The senior class will be recognized at 11:30 a.m. and track action follows at noon.
