ORLANDO – While the current UCF football team was winning its second straight game to start the 2019 season – a 48-14 road triumph over FAU – 13 former Knights began the 2019 NFL season with week one action all across the country.
Four different Knights played starting roles, two scored touchdowns, and Matt Prater – now in his 13th season in the NFL – continued to cement his legacy, going 2-for-2 on field goals, including a 55-yarder in the Detroit Lions' tie with the Arizona Cardinals.
Monday Night Football was more like Monday Knight Football as Jordan Akins and the Houston Texans squared off with Tre'Quan Smith, Latavius Murray and the New Orleans Saints.
Both Smith and Murray scored touchdowns in the game with the latter pulling the Saints to within four points, at 14-10, with a 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Smith, meanwhile, hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees at the start of the fourth to give the Saints a 24-21 advantage.
The Saints eventually won 30-28 on a field goal in the final minute of the game.
