ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – A few weeks into the collegiate summer league season, several UCF baseball players have shined in the opening stages of their campaigns.
Brody Wofford has had a hot bat to start the summer for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. The bruising outfield is hitting .343 through the opening 10 games with three RBI and a pair of homers. The rising senior ranks 13th in the Northwoods League in OPS at 1.054.
Chandler Robertson and Brandon Hernandez led the way offensively for the Staunton Braves during the opening week. Robertson went 5-for-16 (.375) over the opening five games with three RBI, while Hernandez posted a .385 clip at the dish with an RBI. The latter went 3-for-5 with four runs and a pair of homers against the Strasburg Express on June 14.
Elsewhere in the Valley Baseball League, Dalton Wingo has been on a tear for the Waynesboro Generals. The rising sophomore is hitting .345 with four RBI through his opening eight games of the season. Wingo went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, a walk and three runs scored against the Front Royals Cardinals.
Jaylyn Whitehead and Griffin Bernardo have had strong starts for the Cincinnati Steam. Whitehead made his first appearance of the year on June 13 against the Muskegon Clippers for a 3 1/3-inning outing with six strikeouts and no walks. Bernardo has been one of the top bats in the Great Lakes League. The native of Longwood, Fla., has a .393 batting average through seven games with two doubles, one triple, one home run and 10 RBI, the latter ranks sixth in the league.
NORTHWOODS LEAGUE
• Dallas Beaver (Lakeshore Chinooks) – Played in 10 games with a .222 batting average, two doubles, one RBI, six walks and five runs scored.
• Luis Ferrer (Lakeshore Chinooks) – Made summer debut on June 10 to toss one shutout inning with one strikeout against Fond du Lac.
FLORIDA LEAGUE
• Anthony George (Seminole County Scorpions) – Hitting .172 over 10 games with six walks, as he continues his return from a knee injury.
• Adams Torres (Winter Garden Squeeze) – Driven in five RBI behind a .250 clip at the plate. Notched a trio of multi-hit outings, including a solo homer against Seminole County on June 6.
EXPEDITION LEAGUE
• Jeffrey Hakanson (Western Nebraska Pioneers) – Made three appearances without allowing a run or a hit. Fanned 11 over five innings of work so far this season.
• Jack Sinclair (Western Nebraska Pioneers) – Started a pair of games. Picked up first win of the season with a five-inning outing with five punchouts and one walks against the Pierre Trappers on June 13.
WEST COAST LEAGUE
• Garrett Westberg (Port Angeles Lefties) – Appeared in three games with two starts to record a 3.60 ERA and nine strikeouts over 10 innings of work. Went five innings with four punchouts against the Victoria HarbourCats on June 16.
