ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF duo of sophomore Cassady Brewer and freshman Alea White had key contributions in the Knights' sweep of regular-season champion No. 24 Tulsa and earned the American Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The awards were announced Monday by the league office.
White tallied a 2-1 record and compiled a 1.51 ERA with eight strikeouts in 18.1 innings of work. The Land O'Lakes, Fla., native notched the series-clinching victory Sunday at Tulsa by tossing the first four innings and coming in as a reliever with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh to record the game-ending strikeout in a 4-3 win.
The freshman pitcher notched her 18th victory of the campaign, which is second on the Knights' career charts for a rookie behind Mackenzie Audas' 21 wins in 2012. She also tossed a five-hit complete game in game one at Bethune-Cookman to start the week and came back in the second contest of the doubleheader to earn a save, preserving a 5-4 victory.
Brewer was clutch against the Golden Hurricane, driving in the only two runs of Saturday's contest to even the series and blasting a solo homer in the fifth inning, which proved to be the difference in the finale of the three-game set on Sunday. The sophomore catcher also added five hits and three RBI in the doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman.
The Apopka, Fla., native finished the five-game week with a .471 batting average, .500 on-base percentage and .882 slugging percentage along with eight RBI. She also extended her hitting streak to 11 games, while registering two multi-hit and three multi-RBI games.
The pair also helped the Knights win their 12th-straight conference road series and improve to 21-1 in three-game sets since joining The American in 2014.
These are the first weekly conference accolades earned by Brewer and White in their UCF careers. The Knights tallied a pair of player of the week honors earlier this season by junior Courtney Rotton (2/27) and senior Linnea Goodman (4/10).
