ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) -- The UCF men's tennis team came up short in a 4-1 loss to No. 46 Memphis at the UCF Tennis Complex on Sunday morning.
Sophomores Jesse Flores and Mariano Porter opened the match in UCF's favor with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Memphis responded with a matching 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles to force the point to court one.
Sophomores Chris Barrus and Inaki Espindola battled No. 64 Connor Glennon and Kia Lemke, but the Tigers prevailed 7-6(2) to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Memphis earned wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to extend its lead to 3-0. Flores halted the run with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Shakeel Manji at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Mariano Porter won his opening set 6-3 at No. 5 singles, but saw his winning streak come to an end as Patrick Mayer came back to clinch a 4-1 victory for Memphis.
Senior Francesc Aulina, who was recognized prior to the match for Senior Day, was locked in a battle with No. 51 Connor Glennon at No. 1 singles when Memphis clinched. Junior Jose Sangroniz and Ryan Peniston each claimed a set at No. 2 singles and were in a close third set when the match ended.
UCF returns to action at the American Athletic Conference Championships in Tulsa next weekend. The tournament begins on Thursday with an 8-9 matchup at 9 a.m. Seeds will be announced once all of the results have been entered from this weekend's matches.
