ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF men's tennis team earned its third consecutive win with a 4-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday.
UCF (8-6) used a comeback in singles action to claim its sixth win away from home this season.
Incoming inclement weather pushed the start time up to 10 a.m. and FGCU used the earlier start to jump out on UCF. The Eagles swept doubles action, earning wins on all three courts to claim an early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Inaki Espindola pulled the Knights even with a straight set win (6-4, 6-4) win over Eduardo Alfonzo at No. 4 singles. FGCU regained a 2-1 lead with a win on court two, but sophomore Chris Barrus battled for a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to keep the teams even.
Sophomore Mariano Porter gave UCF its first lead of the day with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles. Porter is a perfect 6-0 this spring, including three wins at the number five position. A win from Jordi Vives at the number one spot tied the teams at 3-3, setting up the decisive set on court six.
Sophomore Reece Acree stormed back after dropping the first set, 7-5, to earn a pair of 6-4 wins in set two and three and give the Knights a 4-3 team win.
UCF faces its first American Athletic Conference opponent of 2015 on Friday, traveling to Tampa for a 5 p.m. match at USF on March 6.
