CORAL GABLES, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 70 UCF men's tennis team was undeterred at facing its second ranked opponent in four days, earning a 4-3 win over No. 52 Miami at Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Monday afternoon.
The Knights (2-4) opened the match with a victory, as sophomore Jesse Flores and freshman Tyler Pate posted a 6-2 win in number three doubles. Miami earned the win on the second court and won the tiebreaker with a 7-6 (7-4) win at number one to claim the doubles point.
A 6-4, 6-2 win from No. 56 Piotr Lomacki at the number one position gave Miami a 2-0 lead in the match, but the Black and Gold battled back. Wins from sophomores Chris Barrus and Reece Acree evened the match at 2-2. Barrus earned the 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win on court four, while Acree claimed a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win on court six.
After dropping the first set, 6-0, Jesse Flores bounced back to top Bernard Tefel 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the number five position and give the Black and Gold a 3-2 advantage in the match. Junior Jose Sangroniz ensured the UCF victory with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Wilfredo Gonzalez at number two.
UCF returns to action at the Army Kickoff Jan. 30-Feb. 1. The Knights will face Boston College, Army and Buffalo at West Point.
