ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 70 UCF men's tennis team went toe-to-toe with the No. 31 Ole Miss Rebels, but came up short in a 6-1 loss at the UCF Tennis Complex on Friday.
Opening the day with doubles action, Ole Miss claimed the first point of the day as the Rebels won at number three, 6-2, and number one, 6-1. Senior Francesc Aulina and sophomore Reece Acree battled Zvonimir Babic and Joe Rogers at the number two spot, but came up short in the tiebreaker to fall, 7-6 (6).
The Knights looked to shift the momentum heading into singles action, but wins from No. 80 Stefan Lindmark and William Kallberg at the number one and number four positions, respectively, kept the match in favor of Ole Miss. No. 120 Ricardo Jorge topped sophomore Jesse Flores, 7-6 (6), 6-4 to give the Rebels a 4-0 advantage.
Sophomore Inaki Espindola captured the first set, 6-2, against Babic at the number three spot, but Babic came back to best Espindola 7-5, 6-4. Junior Jose Sangroniz fell behind at the number two position, dropping the first set, 6-2, but battled back to take the second set, 7-5. Sangroniz earned UCF's first singles win of the match with a 6-1 win in the third set. Sophomore Reece Acree came up short in the six position, falling 7-6 (5), 7-6(3) to close out the match.
Next up, UCF will complete its match against FAU. Originally scheduled as the home opener, inclement weather halted Thursday's matchup between the Knights and the Owls. The teams will conclude the match at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Red Bug Park.
