ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF softball team was sloppy in the field on Friday as it committed five errors which allowed five unearned runs to score for Marshall. The Knights (18-15, 1-6 Conference USA) dealt with an hour and 41 minute rain delay and dropped a tough decision, 10-2, to the Thundering Herd (16-12, 4-3) in five innings at the UCF Softball Complex.
The Knights got into the hit column in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Maddy Schroeder led off the frame with a single through the left side. Schroeder stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on an RBI groundout by freshman Brittanne Gasser. Gasser earned the first RBI of her young career on the play.
Later in the inning, freshman Taylor Wagner also picked up the first RBI of her rookie season as she ripped a single up the middle to score sophomore Kahley Novak from third base. Wagner is making the most of limited opportunities at the plate, hitting .364 in 15 plate appearances.
Senior Lauren Aldridge extended her team-best hitting streak to six games with a fifth inning single. The Vero Beach native stole her 13th base of the season later in the inning and has raised her batting average over 90 points to .281 during her run at the plate.
Freshman Shelby Turnier picked up the loss after allowing four earned runs (nine total) in three innings of work. Fellow freshman Mackenzie Huhn saw the first conference action of her career as she allowed an unearned run on one hit in two relief innings.
The Black and Gold play two of its nine remaining home games remaining at the UCF Softball Complex tomorrow, with season tickets for the remainder of the 2013 season costing only $30. Single game and season tickets are available for purchase online at UCFAthletics.com and Ticketmaster.com, or by calling the UCF Athletics Ticket Office at (407) UCF-1000.
