ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF Athletics celebrated the 2011-12 season Monday evening during the annual Black & Gold Gala inside the UCF Arena. During the event, student-athletes were honored for a variety of athletic and academic accomplishments achieved during the school year.
Each UCF team recognized its student-athletes with five different awards: the Iron Award (selected by the strength and conditioning staff), Coaches Award, Newcomer of the Year, Scholar-Athlete Award and Most Valuable Player.
Additional individual awards were presented to deserving student-athletes. Darnell Sweeney of the baseball team and women's basketball's Racine Davis received the Dr. Bill Callarman Award. The honor, which is named after UCF's former NCAA Faculty Representative, is given for outstanding effort in the classroom.
The Dr. Richard Lapchick Award, which measures athletic and academic achievement, in addition to community service, was presented to Mario Samson (men's tennis), Vanessa Perez (softball) and Claire Frenkel (rowing). Lyle Dankenbring (football) and Tishia Jewell (women's soccer) garnered the Scholar-Athlete Award. Ashia Kelly (women's basketball) and Spencer Scott (men's soccer) received the PRIDE Award. Track and field's Octavious Freeman was named the Freshman of the Year.
The volleyball and men's tennis teams were recognized for having the top team grade-point averages. Women's soccer was selected as the team of the year, and also earned the comeback of the year award for reaching the NCAA Elite Eight.
The Knights Challenge Award, which marks involvement in the community, was presented to the softball program.
Five students who assist UCF's teams on a daily basis were also honored during the banquet. Scott Porter, who works in the Wayne Densch Sports Center under Sheila Klausner, was named the Student Trainer of the Year. Andrew Dodge (football) was tabbed as the Manager of the Year. Joshua Vinson received Video Person of the Year honors, Caitlin McCaffrey was named the Tutor of the Year and Brandon Naidus was tabbed as the Athletics Communications Student of the Year. Also earning awards, Bianca (Marielle) Diaz received Ticket Sales Student of the Year accolades and Keith Diaz was the Facilities and Event Operations Student of the Year.
