ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - In a top-25 match-up at the UCF Soccer Complex, No. 17 Wake Forest broke a 0-0 stalemate in the 60th minute en route to a 1-0 victory over No. 24 UCF Sunday evening. The Knights fell to 1-1 on the season as they opened 2011 with a 5-1 win vs. South Florida Aug. 19.
UCF senior goalkeeper Aline Reis totaled five saves including two highlight-reel stops against Wake Forest (2-0), while Tishia Jewell led all players with six shots, placing three on goal.
Through the first 22 minutes, UCF recorded the only three shots of the match, and they were all stopped by Demon Deacon keeper Aubrey Bledsoe. The visitors, though, finally attacked when Rachel Nuzzolese broke in by herself in the 23rd minute. Reis advanced forward and met Nuzzolese, putting her body in front of a hard shot from 10 yards out to keep the game scoreless.
After entering halftime with a 6-3 lead in shots, UCF witnessed Wake Forest attempt to seize momentum when the second half got underway. Reis was forced to make an easy save on India Winford 2:45 into the stanza, then made a dazzling save on Winford in the 52nd minute by tipping a shot just over the crossbar.
However the Demon Deacons ultimately capitalized in the 60th minute when Nuzzolese, who just came off the bench, fired a shot into the back of the net from 19 yards out.
UCF hoped to have an answer yet could not solve the Wake Forest backline during the final minutes of regulation.
