ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Two of the top newcomers in Conference USA last season are making their presence known in summer leagues. UCF third baseman and C-USA Freshman of the Year Chris Taladay (Windermere, Fla.) has been selected as a Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League All-Star, while junior Jonathan Griffin (Bradenton, Fla.) is a North All-Star in the Valley Baseball League.
The Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League announced its roster for the Mid-Atlantic Classic which takes place Wednesday and pits its top players including Taladay against the best players from the Valley Baseball League. However the VBL has only released its rosters for its All-Star Game Sunday evening, highlighted by the selection of Griffin.
Taladay anchored third base for the Knights in 2010 after starting the year as a backup catcher. During the summer as a member of the Herndon Braves, he is receiving a lot of playing time at the hot corner as well as at first base. He is hitting .321 with seven doubles and a homer, and is tied for fourth in the league with 16 RBI.
Griffin started to turn it on in the second half of the season as the Knights first baseman. And for the Luray Wranglers this summer, he has posted a .327 average with five homers, 16 RBI and 17 runs. He ranks fifth in the league in home runs and slugging (.561).
