MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UCFAthletics.com) - Despite getting a goal and an assist from sophomore Spencer Scott (Palm City, Fla.), UCF (3-3-2, 0-1-0) dropped its Conference USA opener 3-2 at Memphis (4-1-2, 1-0-0) Saturday night in men's soccer action. The game was knotted at 2-2 before the host Tigers scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute.
With the Knights trailing 2-1 after a Memphis goal in the 60th minute, Scott scored the equalizer just six minutes later, getting a pass from junior Yaron Bacher (Atlanta, Ga.) and found the back of the net for his first career goal.
However, the Tigers pushed across the game-winner with less than 10 minutes to play, getting a goal from Parker Duncan on a close shot in the box.
"It was a good game for both teams," said head coach Bryan Cunningham. "We fought our way back twice, but unfortunately we gave away a goal late and Memphis held on for the win."
Neither team was able to dent the scoreboard over the first 30 minutes of the game, but UCF had the first serious threat. In the 22nd minute, Scott (Palm City, Fla.) ripped a shot past the keeper only to watch it hit off the post and keep the game scoreless.
UCF and Memphis traded goals in a six-minute span to move to halftime locked in a 1-1 tie. The Knights fell behind 1-0 in the 31st minute when Brian Farrell scored his first goal of the season after a thrown in from Ryan Ruble. Robson then scored in the 37th minute with a bullet past the keeper. Scott assisted on the marker, Robson's team-leading third of the season.
Freshman Shawn Doyle (Fort Myers, Fla.) made four saves in goal for the Knights.
