CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (UCFAthletics.com) - In a rematch of the first NCAA title game in 1982, No. 1 North Carolina defeated UCF, 4-0, Friday on day one of the Carolina Nike Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Knights dropped to 1-1-0 on the season after falling to the defending national champion Tar Heels (2-0-0).
Facing a UNC team that had already taken down then-No. 3 UCLA, 7-2, in its season-opener, sophomore Aline Reis completed here evening with seven saves. On the attacking side of the ball, senior Courtney Whidden posted two shots with both of them on goal, and three newcomers also had attempts with junior Kim Newsome and freshmen Bianca Joswiak and Tiia Tikkanen adding one shot apiece.
Weather affected the schedule of play as both programs got their match underway an hour late. And the shots were a little tardy as well as there were only two attempts in the first 21 minutes. But the third shot of the night gave UNC the lead when Courtney Jones beat Reis in the 22nd minute.
The Tar Heels then would enter halftime with a 2-0 cushion on a goal from Tobin Heath just over 10 minutes later. Joswiak had UCF's first shot of the half, and Whidden put one on goal in the 41st minute only to see the UNC defense get in the way to keep UCF off the board.
Following the break, North Carolina continued its attack and Heath put her second in the back of the net in the 50th minute. Brittani Bartok wrapped up the scoring for the Tar Heels with her first of the year in the 74th minute in a second half where Reis made all seven of her saves.
The Carolina Nike Classic will conclude for the Knights when they tangle with No. 10 Duke Sunday at 1 p.m. UCF's next home match is Sept. 10 against No. 10 Florida State at 7 p.m.
