ROCKY FACE, Ga. (UCFAthletics.com) - Making its season debut, the UCF men's golf team is in second after the opening round Friday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club. Playing in his first collegiate event, UCF freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.) leads the event after firing a four-under 68.
The Knights (289, +1) trail first-place East Tennessee State by two strokes. Play at the three-round, three-day tournament will resume Saturday.
Nine of the top-25 teams in the nation are competing at the event, including top-ranked Georgia, No. 6 Florida and No. 7 Clemson.
Barber posted five birdies and one bogey on the day. Four players are tied for second at three-under 69.
UCF senior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) is tied for ninth at 71 (-1). Senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) and redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) are tied for 36th (75, +3). After totaling a five-over 77, junior Nico Donaldson (Windermere, Fla.) is tied for 64th.
UCF is one stroke ahead of third-place Ole Miss. Clemson and Chattanooga are tied at fourth at three-over.
