Men's Golf to Open Fall Campaign Friday

Sept. 11, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - This weekend the UCF men's golf team will start the fall campaign at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in northern Georgia. The three-day event begins on Friday at The Farm Golf Course located in Rocky Face.

There will be 18 teams from the southeast competing in the tournament. The squads will play 18 holes each day with the conclusion coming on Sunday.

Thirteen teams ranked in the top 30 of the Golfweek preseason rankings will compete in the tournament. The impressive field is highlighted by top-ranked Georgia followed by Florida (6), Clemson (7), Georgia Tech (10), South Carolina (13), East Tennessee State (14), Wake Forest (15), Texas Tech (17), Tennessee (22), UAB (24), North Carolina (26), Mississippi State (28), and Mississippi (30). Teams participating outside the top 30 are Alabama, Auburn, Georgia State, and Chattanooga.

The Knights starting lineup will consist of seniors Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) and David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.), junior Nico Donaldson (Windermere, Fla.), redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) and freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.).

Over the summer, Johnson won the Florida Match Play Championship on Aug. 10. Last year, he was named the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year and earned a spot on All-C-USA First Team along with Forest.

Both players helped lead the Knights to an impressive campaign, which included a pair of tournament victories and an appearance in the NCAA West Regional.

After competing at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, UCF will travel next week to Olympia Fields, Ill., for the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
