ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Junior shortstop Eric Kallstrom set a career-high with four hits to lead the UCF baseball team to a 10-6 win in game one vs. Memphis Friday night at Jay Bergman Field. The Knights matched their season-high with 17 hits in the victory as their record jumped to 25-11 on the year and 3-7 in Conference USA.
Kallstrom finished his evening 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, ultimately extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Freshman Evan Stobbs, meanwhile, also reached a personal-best with four hits and added three RBI and a run scored.
Picking up the win on the mound, junior Kyle Sweat (4-2) went 5.1 innings with five strikeouts against the Tigers (12-20, 3-7).
UCF batted around in the bottom of the first inning, plating four runs on five hits against Scott McGregor. Senior Dwayne Bailey got it going with a double to the left-field corner and reached third on a fielding error. Junior Colin Arnold quickly brought him in on an infield single, while Kallstrom, sophomore Chris Duffy and senior Tyson Auer later notched RBI singles in the frame as well for the 4-0 lead.
After an Eric Farrell RBI double in the second for Memphis, a Tiger fielding error in the third gave UCF another run. The Knights eventually scored two more times on a Bailey sac fly and a RBI base hit off the bat of senior Ryan Richardson to make it 7-1.
Memphis did tally a pair of runs in the sixth, but UCF answered right back with two of its own in the bottom half when Stobbs lined a 1-2 offering from reliever Garrett Hachtel over Robby Graham's head in right to score pinch-runner Chadd Hartman and Kallstrom. Stobbs was back at it in the eighth with an RBI single up the middle to bring the UCF advantage to 10-4. That shot from the first baseman put the game away, as sophomore Austin Hudson went the final 3.2 innings for his first collegiate save, giving up just two runs in the ninth inning.
Game two is set for Saturday at 6 p.m., as all fans attending the UCF football spring game can enter the gates of Jay Bergman Field for free with their ticket stub.
