Sorrento, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF women's golfers Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md.) and May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) are tied for fifth place after posting scores of 73 (+1) during the opening round of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic on Monday. The Knights are in a four-way tie for fifth in the team standings after completing round one with a cumulative score of 302 (+14) at the University Golf Club.
Both Connelly and Tomimbang had stretches during their opening rounds that saw each player birdie three consecutive holes. For Connelly, the junior made a team-high five birdies on the day, including her stretch of three straight on holes 15, 16 and 17. Her classmate, Tomimbang, added four birdies, including her trio of consecutive birdies on holes three, four and five.
Sophomore Leigh Crosby (Athens, Ga.) and freshman Jessy Tang (Miami, Fla.) each registered scores of 78 (+6) in their opening rounds to count towards the team's 302 total. The Knights are nine shots behind leader Florida State (293, +5), but just two shots behind host LSU and 10th-ranked Wake Forest (300, +12), who share second.
Among the trio of teams tied with UCF in fifth are 13th-ranked Georgia, 14th-ranked Alabama and 34th-ranked North Carolina. The Knights were ranked 44th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, which was their highest ranking since head coach Emilee Klein took over the program in 2006.
Connelly and Tomimbang are in a six-way tie for fifth, three shots behind co-leaders Whitney Wright of Florida State and Laura Crawford of Wake Forest, who both carded a 70 (-2) in their first 18 holes of the three-round event.
