Tang Leads UCF Women's Golf To Tri-match Win Over Iowa State and No. 15 Purdue

Feb. 9, 2008

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team defeated Iowa State and No. 15 Purdue in a 36-hole tri-match between the three schools on Saturday at NorthShore Golf Club. The Knights posted 21 points to secure the team title in what served as a tune-up for the first official event of the spring - the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 24-26 in San Juan.

The teams, who played the NorthShore course at a yardage of 6,150, used a modified Ryder Cup scoring system to keep track of the results and UCF freshman Jessy Tang (Miami, Fla.) took home medalist honors after firing a two-round total of 142 (-2). Tang opened with a 70 (-2) on the opening 18 holes of the day, while carding an even-par 72 in her second 18.

"I thought it was good for us to get out and compete and play well against two of the top teams in the country," Klein said. "The girls have been practicing well during their break and I was really pleased with the way they played, especially Jessy. This will serve as a good confidence boost for us as we enter the spring season."

Purdue, who will serve as the host for the Knights' spring opening tournament, finished second with 12 points, while Iowa State placed third with 4.5 points.

Junior May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) posted a pair of 76's on her day to finish second among the Knight golfers. Senior Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md.) shaved six strokes off her opening round to register a 74 (+2) in her second 18. Connelly's two-round total of 154 (+10) was a stroke better than freshman Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.), who went 75-80 to card a 155 (+11).

Sophomores Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) and Leigh Crosby (Athens, Ga.) rounded out the scoring for UCF with respective scores of 159 (+15) and 161 (+17).

Purdue's Maria Hernandez fired the low round of the day with a 68 (-4) in her second round. She improved eight strokes from her opening 18 to finish the 36 holes with an even-par score of 144.
