Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Sophomore Leigh Crosby (Athens, Ga.) fired a 71 (-1) to help lead the UCF women's golf team into a tie for fifth place following round one action of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Crosby is tied for fifth in the individual standings after breaking par for the first time in her UCF career.
The Knights are currently tied with LSU and only trail tournament co-leaders No. 16 Alabama and TCU (293, +5) by four strokes entering round-two play on Monday. No. 6 Arkansas and Florida State are tied for third only one shot in front of UCF after registering opening-round scores of 296 (+8).
"I am really proud of the way we played," head coach Emilee Klein said. "We are in contention with some of the best teams in the country and that shows that all of our hard work is paying off."
Juniors Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md.) and May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) are both tied for 17th after opening-rounds scores of 74 (+2). Tomimbang and Crosby both made four birdies as the team combined to make 10 in its opening round.
"Leigh played awesome," Klein added. "That was her best round as a collegian and Stephanie and May also played great. We just have to go out tomorrow and try to do the same things and stay consistent."
Freshman Jessy Tang (Miami, Fla.) also had her round count towards the team score as she posted a 78 (+6).
Arkansas' Stacy Lewis leads the tournament after carding a 68 (-4) in her opening round. Tate is the No. 2 ranked player in collegiate golf according to the Golfweek rankings. Georgia is alone in seventh at 298 (+10). No. 11 Purdue and classic host is in a four-way tie for eighth with South Carolina, Kent State and Tennessee. The top 11 teams in the 18-team field are only separated by six strokes.
