Men's Soccer Faces UAB on Saturday

Oct. 6, 2006

ORLANDO - Riding the momentum of its upset win over No. 17 Memphis, the UCF men's soccer team plays host to Conference USA rival UAB on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex.

A stellar effort from the defense enabled the Golden Knights (3-6-0, 1-1-0 C-USA) to shut down the No. 10 ranked offense in the nation and one of the top goal scorers in the conference on Wednesday night. Sophomore goalkeeper Marcus Rein (Scotts Valley, Calif./Edison Academic Center) needed to make five saves to record his third shutout of the season.

Sophomore Zak Boggs (Vienna, W.Va./The Pendleton School) continues to spark the UCF offense as he extended his point streak to four matches with the game-winning goal against the Tigers. He leads the Golden Knights with three goals and one assist for seven points. Both sophomore Ryan Roushandel (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) and freshman Jamal Robinson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Fort Wayne Northrop HS) have each tallied a pair of goals.

"Every game takes a team effort. On Wednesday night, every one of our players did work on both sides of the ball. Not only did they defend but they created chances," said UCF head coach Brent Erwin. "In order to continue to be successful, we have to continue to play as team."

UCF need another solid team effort to defeat the Blazers, who come to Orlando with a 6-4-1 overall record and a 1-1-0 mark in league play. UAB's roster includes two of the top 10 scorers in C-USA in seniors Jerson Monteiro and Lukasz Kwapisz. Both have six goals to their credit.

In goal, senior Jeremy Drake has earned nine starts and owns a 1.63 goals-against-average.

The Golden Knights met the Blazers for the first time in the fall of 2005 with UAB earning the 1-0 victory.
