Greensboro, N.C. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team was able to gain some ground on first-round leader Birmingham Southern Saturday during the second round of the Lady Pirate Fall Invitational. But no one could stop Augusta State as it posted a team score of 286 (-2) to vault into first place. The Golden Knights recorded a 302 (+14), and with a combined two-day total of 593 (+17), they will begin the final round tied with Maryland for third place.
UCF began the day three strokes behind Birmingham Southern, and was able to pick up a shot Saturday to move within two. Augusta State moved past both programs, though, by having four student-athletes complete round two at even par or better. Ashley Mylton of UNC-Greensboro and Patti Hogeboom of Augusta State are the only players in red figures as each has a one-under 143.
For the Gold and Black, freshman Sara Hurwitch (Potomac Falls, Va.) climbed from a tie for 17th on the individual leaderboard into a tie for ninth thanks to a one-over 73. Classmate Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) remained in the top 20, shooting a four-over 76 in the second round to tie for 18th overall.
Also having a solid performance on the course, senior Kristy McLaughlin (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) completed 18 holes with a three-over 75, which was one shot better than round one. She will enter Sunday's action in a tie for 33rd.
Final round of the Lady Pirate Invitational gets underway with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
