ORLANDO - Goals by sophomore Jake Howard (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) and junior Rafael Teixeira (Coconut Creek, Fla./Taravella HS) gave the UCF men's soccer team a 2-0 shutout victory over North Florida (2-3-0) in the Golden Knights home opener on Thursday night.
The Golden Knights, who earned their first win of season and improved to 1-4-0, scored their first goal in the 28th minute when sophomore Ryan Roushandel (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) served a free kick into the box where Howard redirected it into the net.
UCF continued to dominate throughout the first half and held an 11-5 advantage in shots at the intermission. UNF goalkeeper Michael Frost made five of his six saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Ten minutes into the second half, a bullet by sophomore Zak Boggs (Vienna, W.Va./The Pendleton School) was stopped by Frost. Later, in the 77th minute, freshman Andy Masteller (St. John, Ind./Andrean HS) flicked the ball to Teixeira, who sent a shot into the top left corner.
The Golden Knights finished the night with a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Marcus Rein (Scotts Valley, Calif./Edison Acaemic Center) stopped three shots to earn the first shutout of his career.
"I think we're all happy to get a win tonight," said UCF head coach Brent Erwin. "Tonight we played very well, had a lot of possession and created a lot of chances on goal. We came away with two good goals, but we were disappointed that we didn't score more with the chances that we had. Without question, we're most pleased about getting the shutout."
The Golden Knights return to action when they host Wright State at the UCF Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. Admission to UCF men's soccer for the 2006 season is free courtesy of McDonald's.
