TULSA, Okla. - A late second half goal by junior Eric Burkholder gave Tulsa a 2-1 win over UCF in Conference USA men's soccer at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium on Saturday night.
The Golden Hurricane improved to 3-5-0 overall and 1-0-0 in C-USA, while the Golden Knights dropped to 2-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in C-USA.
"We were bitterly disappointed to lose tonight. A lot of credit goes to Tulsa, who played well on its homefield," said UCF head coach Brent Erwin. "In C-USA, every point counts and we are disappointed to come out of this game with nothing."
Tulsa sophomore Eric Defreitas opened up scoring in the sixth minute as his shot found the right corner of the net. The 1-0 lead held until the 32nd minute when UCF sophomore Ryan Roushandel (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) connected from 10 yards out on a pass from sophomore Zak Boggs (Vienna, W.Va./The Pendleton School).
The score remained knotted at one all until the 84th minute. After dribbling through the UCF defense, Burkholder took a shot from 18 yards out that went in the right side.
Junior goalkeeper Dominic Cervi made two saves for the Golden Hurricane, while his counterpart Marcus Rein (Scotts Valley, Calif./Edison Academic Center) made four for the Golden Knights.
Next up, the Golden Knights visit C-USA foe Marshall on Wednesday, Sept. 30 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Admission to UCF men's soccer for the 2006 season is free courtesy of McDonald's.
