Holly Boot shot a 2-over-par 74 to lead UCF Sunday as the Golden Knights posted an opening-round 15-over 303 at the Conference USA Women's Golf Championship at Ironwood Golf and Country Club. The Golden Knights are in fifth place, 11 shots behind leader UTEP.

"We didn't make as many birdies as we would have liked, but we played pretty solid throughout the lineup," UCF coach Emilee Klein said. "We didn't do anything to take ourselves out of contention so if we can put together two good rounds, we can win this tournament. We generally play better as the tournament goes along so I'm looking forward to the next two days."

UTEP carded a 4-over 292 on the Lee Trevino Signature Golf Course at Ironwood and leads second-place Tulsa by three shots heading into Monday's second round. Host East Carolina is in third at 9-over, one shot better than SMU in fourth.

UTEP's Gerina Mendoza fired a 3-under 69 and leads Tulsa's Michaela Cavener and UAB's Christina Wentworth by two shots in the race for medalist honors. Those three were the only in the field of 45 to break par Sunday.

Boot is tied for eighth with five other golfers. She made bogeys on the first and third hole before stringing together 15 consecutive pars to close the round. "I hit my driver really well, which helped me keep the ball in play," Boot said. "I wasn't able to get any birdie putts to drop, but I rolled the ball well enough to leave myself with a lot of tap-ins for par."

Kristy McLaughlin carded a 3-over 75 and is tied for 14th, while Ashley Grier is tied for 22nd after posting a 4-over 76. Jessica Trein and Annabel Silk are tied for 27th at 6-over.

Trein made four birdies, including a tap-in on the 18th hole, en route to shooting a 78. She made three birdies on the front side and turned at even-par, but ran into trouble on the back, registering three double bogeys before hitting her approach shot on the final hole two feet from the cup.
